Hindi Films in the early 1970s could be clearly divided into two categories : “Rajesh Khanna” films and “Others”.
Such was Rajesh Khanna’s domination that unless you were a name already (like Dharmendra, Shashi Kapoor or Sanjeev Kumar), it was tough for another hero to compete with the Rajesh wave. Ageing heroes like Rajendra Kumar and Biswajeet began getting rejected, aspiring heroes like Rakesh Pandey and Romesh Sharma began getting dejected. You needed tremendous staying power, patience and a lot of luck to ride through those times. Ask Amitabh Bachchan who had a string of flops till Dame Luck smiled on him, with the lead role in Zanjeer falling into his lap with Dev Anand rejecting it.

“Mere Jeewan Saathi” (1972) is full of great songs that were big rage during its heydays. The popularity of songs of this movie was just incredible.

Gayaa bachpan jo aayi jawaani

I have just realised that I have not posted even a single song from “Aankhon Aankhon Mein” (1972). When I was growing up, the songs of this movie were all over the loudspeakers and radio, and kids like me simply loved these songs. In my case, I enjoyed listening to those songs despite being unaware about the movie those songs were from.

“Do Chor” (1972) was quite a popular movie of its time with some popular songs in it. Modern day movie watchers may not be aware of this movie. So let me make them aware of this movie.

“Jeet” (1972) was a movie in which Randhir Kapoor was the hero. And even the best efforts from Laxmikant Pyarelal’s music could not save this movie from flopping.

Kapoor khaandaan males were known to romance their would be wives on screen before tying up the knot in real life. Shammi Kapoor has done it, and Rishi Kapoor has done it. In case of Randhir Kapoor’s would be wife, Babita, I found her romancing Shammi Kapoor and Shashi Kapoor onscreen instead (Chhee Chhee !).

“Mere Jeewan Saathi” (1972) is a movie starring Rajesh Khanna and Tanuja, the hit pair of “Haathi Mere Saathi”. This movie, like most Rajesh Khanna movies, was a musical blockbuster, where almost all songs went on to become very popular.

When I was growing up in a city in 1972, a new movie hall had come up and it was showing “Seeta Aur Geeta” (1972). Its song were so wonderful to listen to that I as a pre teen kid dearly wanted to watch the movie. One fine day, I dragged my elders to the movie hall to watch this movie. And what did I see ? The movie was withdrawn the previous day, and the movie “Zindagi Zindagi” (1972) was being shown instead.
