Hullo to all in Atuldom
Only yesterday I saw a rather old episode of the TALK SHOW – back then they used to call it interview (simple)- “Phool Khile Hain Gulshan Gulshan” which Tabassum used to host. I am sure all movie/ music lovers would have seen at least one episode on Friday evenings (I think). I used to try and see it without fail. But the episode (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MFFwOfs1IWw) I saw yesterday on YouTube I don’t recollect having seen in 1983. Just as well since; when I saw it yesterday it was an eye opener. It featured Anand Bakshi the lyricist.

Today, 21st June is designated as the World Music Day. The reminders checked in quite late in the afternoon today. The historical details about this event are available on the internet, and our dear Arun ji has also summarized them in a brief post on the Whatsapp group.
As I set down thinking about this event, and to search out an appropriate song for today, my mind almost immediately went to the 1985 film ‘Sur Sangam’. In my mind, this is probably the best film on the theme of classical music, in the recent decades. Times are past that classical music and the legends of this art form used to be the central themes of many a film, especially from the historical perspective, in the decades that coincide with the golden era of Hindi film music. Historical persona such as Tansen and Baiju, Narsi Mehta and Meerabai, Kalidas and Soordas, Kabir and Rani Roopmati have been central themes and central characters of many a film till the decade of 1970s. Beyond that, I cannot easily recall a film whose theme and storyline is based primarily on classical music.

The byline in one of the news programs on the 6th evening was – “फिल्मों का एक युग, मिनटों में सिमट गया” (“filmon ka ek yug, minton mein simat gaya”) (an entire era of (Hindi) filmdom, faded away in a matter of minutes). A completely unexpected departure happened earlier in the day. Very much in the saddle, and very much in the busy prime of his career, Om Puri passed away suddenly. The amount of intensity he packed into his characters, and in his dialogue delivery, it seemed he was going to last forever on the screen. Sixty six years they say. Goodness, it just seems like yesterday that Bhikhu picked up that axe used to cut wood at a cremation ground, and brutally attacked his own sister.

So now we are all busy discussing the pros and cons of the demonetisation on our WhatsApp group. We are also having a fair number of jokes on the subject. But as our dear thandapani mentioned last week when our PM dropped the demonetisation bomb (as I like to call it) I have also decided to wait and watch for the rush at the banks and cash ATMs. At such a time a few songs ran through my mind. Let us have one of them today.

Asha ji, one of the leading lady playback singers in Indian cinema, turns 83 today. Seventy of thes 83 years have been spent in an active career, probably the longest such accomplishment by a playback singer. As Sadanand ji indicates in his article (the one before this), he states that she is currently on a concert tour of US. This speaks of the energy and the verve of this personality.

Indian cricket and Bollywood both enjoy enormous popularity among Indians. With the fan following that some of the cricketing stars enjoy, a few producers have toyed with the idea of featuring them in main roles, side roles and also in guest roles in their movies. The underlying idea seems to be to encash their popularity for drawing more movie watchers to the movie halls. But past experiences show that most films featuring cricketers have flopped.

If November was the month of many Miss Indias-turned- actresses ‘ birthdates then December will be proud to call itself the month of actors who are/were superstars. The list has Dharamendra, Shatrughan SInha, Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor, Govinda, Anil Kapoor, Salman Khan & Rajesh Khanna. (Disclaimer to all those who want to correct this list: I have chosen to mention only those actors who are/were superstars. The anniversary list page on our blog mentions around 24 male birthdays.) Dharamendra turned 80 a few days back; Shatrughan Sinha turned 70; Dilip Saab turned 93 yesterday; Raj Kapoor would have been 91 in 15 days from now; Govinda will turn 52; Anil Kapoor 59; Salman Khan 50 and Rajesh Khanna would have been 73. Phew! Thats a lot of statistics! Let me wish those whose birthdates I missed a very Belated Happy Birthday. {Isn’t that what we do when we miss some friend’s birthday; wish belatedly ;-)}
