Geeta Dutt – Solos and duets (03)
———————————–

My comment on the 900th song post of Geeta Dutt’s songs :

Congratulations on completing 900 songs of Geeta Dutt. Out of the 500 plus songs that remain to covered in the blog, there are many which sound so beautiful. I have made a short list of her duets and solos yet to be posted and it is difficult to decide on one. In fact I wrote down the lyrics of two such song over the weekend.

Like Husnlal-Bhagatram’s songs, I find it difficult to move past an unheard song by Geeta Dutt. Somehow she captivates the listener on first hearing. A truly gifted and versatile artist.

28/12/2020 – Death anniversary of Pandit Husnlal (Husnlal-Bhagatram)

I have admitted in a post earlier that when I started my journey in the blog, that I could not recognize the name Husnlal-Bhagatram. I knew some of their songs well from radio days, but their MD’s name was conspicuously absent from the consciousness. Only explanation to this I can think of is that most of those known songs were Suraiyya songs and heard on AIR urdu service “aapki farmaish” programme. The reception of AIR’s (Urdu service) in Mumbai was so bad in 80’s that hardly anything said could have registered, unless one sits near the radio and concentrates on what is being said. Even then mostly it was difficult to comprehend, I can recall from memory. So, the name ‘Husnlal-Bhagatram’ was not known to me.

Today (18 November 2020) has got to be an important day in the calendar of Hindi Film Song lovers, especially those who are interested in the history of HFM and its artists. It was on this day 69 years ago that Harmandir Singh Hamraaz, the man behind Hindi Film Geet Kosh (HFGK) was born on 18 November 1951.

We in this blog are very familiar with Mr Harmandir Singh Hamraaz. The fact that we now have the details of almost all Hindi movies and their songs from 1931 till 1985 is something that we take for granted today. But that was not always the case. When we were growing up, there was no authentic record like HFGK those days. Hearsay ruled the roost. Artists claimed to have sung tens of thousands of songs. Their words were accepted and even included in publications such as Guinness Books of world records.

Today’s song is from an unique film – Kinara-1949.

I say Unique because it was produced by a person who was also the film’s Hero and the Music Director. He also sang 3 solo songs in the film. The film’s story was written by him. The name of this person was Madhusudan Acharya. He was a trained singer, visited the USA 9 times, visited the UK once and sang on BBC Radio too. Wrote several stage plays and was a force to reckon with on the Gujarati stage !

Yearwise discussion of Lata Mangeshkar songs in HFM: Part II: 1948-1949
——————————————————————————————
This series was started last Monday (28 September 2020), which was Lata Mangeshkar’s 91st birthday. The series has the ambitious aim of providing statistics of all HFM songs sung by Lata Mangeshkar-Year by year.

The first part of the series covered Lata Maneshkar HFM songs of 1947 and 1948. That was easy, seeing that the total number of HFM songs sung by her in these two years added upto just nine songs.

1948 saw a change in fortune for her. This time she got to sing a decent number of songs from a decent number of movies.

In one recent article of Sudhir jee on his “This week that year” series, he wondered why my spree of posting one “Anmol Ghadi”(1946) song everyday had a break of one day and subsequently the final song got covered after break of one day. I do not have any recollections of those days, but I am certain about the fact that the concept of YIPPying all the songs of a movie had not entered my mind by that time. My attempt was to cover all songs that I could come across. I may have missed stumbling against the one remaining Anmol Ghadi song on that day whereas I could locate it the next day. That is the only plausible explanation that I can think of.

ik arz meri maan lo daftar ko jaana hai
mangal ka din hai aaj koi itwaar nahin hai

These two lines in the song “kyun garm sard hote ho takraar nahin hai” from ‘Chokori’ (1949) sung by Mohammed Rafi has made me to present this song which was not available on-line until SAREGAMA uploaded the audio clip of this rare song on one of the video sharing platforms in early 2019.

When blog ten year challenge series was started in the blog the last year then the seris hoped to take up songs of those movies that were covered in the blog ten years ago and which were not YIPPEED despite the passage of one decade. That way, this series was also an aid in informing us about movies which offer us opportunities not only for Blog ten year challenge, but also subsequently about their potential YIPPiehood.
