The Voice of Mukesh #7
— — — — — — — —
As we had progressed from 1941 to 1942, one duet song for Mukesh was so far missing from the posts, on account of this song being unavailable anywhere I had checked at that point in time. Well, since then, things have changed, and now I have been able to recently acquire an audio recording of this song which I am posting online today. I must thank Shri Pradeep Sharma ji of Delhi, who has been very kind to share this song with me. I came in touch with Pradeep ji, just about one week ago. And in our very first meeting, he shared with me that he is a Mukesh fan, and has most of the songs by this singer. I immediately asked him whether he had this song. He confirmed it spontaneously. Mind you, all this exchange is happening as we meet for the first time, have just said hello, and the only next sentence he had said that he is a Mukesh fan. All other detailed introductions and discussion on collections and singers and songs, happened later. The request for the song, the confirmation and the promise to send it, happened first. And the next day, the song was sitting in my mailbox.

This is the 10th and the last song of the series- SONGS BY NON SINGERS.
For me it has been a very hectic fortnight involving a very busy schedule. Luckily, I was able to locate all the songs’ video and Audio on You Tube but not without the customary hiccups.
Collecting authentic information about old, fogotten artists was also very challenging. To get atleast 10 songs, I dug out about 30 songs from films of 30s to 70s.

You must have heard the famous quotation,”Politics is the last resort of a scoundrel”. Though it is not true in ALL cases,it is used since long.
Similarly, the last resort of young boys who ran away from homes to Bombay in the 30s and 40s (and may be even today) was Hindi Films. For a growing Film industry there was a need for actors, singers, writers, technicians etc. Quantity was always available but quality was questionable. This field did not attract the educated gents from good families. So, whenever any educated i.e. a Graduate joined the industry, he was most welcome and he too would flaunt his degrees proudly. Thus you had a Lyricist named Moti,B.A. and Miss Kamal,B.A. in those days.

We are born with whatever God has given us and we can not change it. Some are born handsome, some tall and some handicapped. Some are born with ‘silver spoon in their mouth’ and yet some are born with artistic inclination.

While it is true that “A man is known by the company he keeps”, in reality we are known by our names.
But suppose, there are 2 persons of the same name, known to you, what will you do ?

Collecting information from forgotten artists is extremely difficult. First problem is to find them. Many yesteryear actors who are still alive are living in anonymity. People who live around them also may not know their identity, many times. If they are members of CINTAA (Cine and TV Artists’ Association, Mumbai), one may get their addresses, but some actors do not even inform CINTAA, when they shift.

Can you guess how many actors and actresses must have worked in ALL Hindi films from 1931 to 2000 ?
I asked this question to my friend and he hazarded a figure of 2000. I put the number at around 3000 to 4000, myself.
What is your Guess ?

Starting with the original superstar of Comedians-Noor Mohd.Charlie, it was a trend that atleast one song was given in every film,to the comedian. After Charlie, there was a big gap, when there was no comedian of his stature in Hindi Films. Ofcourse Kishore Kumar was there, but he was more of an actor and singer than a comedian.
