The cast of this movie had Nirupa Roy, Trilok Kapoor, Manhar Desai, P. Kailash, S.N. Tripathi, Rajan Haksar, Poonam Kapoor, Sundar, Babu Raje, Yashodhara Katju, Rajrani, Helen, Sheela Kashmiri, Roopa, Heera Sawant, Uma Khosla, Lata, Nimmo Firoze, Lata Roy, Sarla, Buta Ram Sharma, Gangaram, K.P. Taqdeer-1943 was specially made for facilitating the Debut of Baby Rani aka Baby Fatima aka Nargis, the only daughter of Singer, actress, Director, Producer and Music Director of early Talkie films – Jaddan Bai. Father of Nargis was a Hindu converted to Islam and from being a Muslim, Nargis got converted to Hinduism before her marriage to Sunil Dutt, with a brand new name “Nirmala Dutt”. Thus a circle was completed from her Nani Daleepabai, who hailed from a Brahmin family to Nirmala Dutt – wife of Sunil Dutt, a Mohyal Brahmin (a sub caste of Saraswat Brahmins). It is said that before marrying Mohan Babu (father of Nargis) Jaddan bai also had changed her name to Jaya Devi Tyagi. However due to Muslim community pressure Mohan Babu had to convert to Islam and become Abdul Rashid.

A group of disgruntled employees – actors, directors, technicians etc -left their parent company studio, Bombay Talkies, in 1942 and established their own studio- Filmistan. In the year 1942, they were not the first or the only people to leave their parent studio and start their own ventures. There were many like them.

There were 5 films called Maa and its varieties like Badi Maa, Chhoti Maa. Then there were Maa films with Baap, Beta, Beti, Behen,Biwi, Mamata, Aanchal, Pyaar, Aansoo, Saugandh, Shakti, and Qasam. Additionally, Durga and Santoshi Maa were also made. Almost 30 films about Maa at one place in the index book. I did not try other letters of the alphabet to see more possible films with the word maa – like Naani Maa, Dadi Maa, Meri Maa, Teri Maa, Apni Maa, Uski Maa etc !

The producer and director was Master Vinayak, who was the owner of the banner, Huns Pictures- Bombay which had made this film. The music was by Annasaheb Mainkar and for this film, his assistant was the old time composer- B.S.Hoogan aka Balwant Singh Hoogan. The cast of the film was Baburao Pendharkar, Master Vinayak, Ratnaprabha, Jawadekar, Bhaurao Datar, Indira Wadkar and others. It had story, dialogues and screenplay by the famous Marathi writer-P.K.Atre aka Acharya Atre aka Pralhad Keshav Atre. This film was the beginning of an effective partnership in making comedy films by Huns Pictures.

Today’s song is from a very old film Comrades-1939.
The title of this film is somewhat misleading. Comrades was the common word used for Communist members. I too was confused with this title, but then I realised that a film on Communist ideology was not possible in British India. The film happens to be a story of three friends, 2 Boys and 1 girl. The film could have been titled Friends or Dosti or some similar title. Wish I was there to make this suggestion to the owners of Sagar Movietone !
