I don’t know what was the promise Atul had made to himself when he started this blog. I don’t know what were his criteria for selecting songs for posting. But I know a whole lot of us liked his blog, got into the habit of logging in to see what he had posted. The next stage in the journey was to send him requests and I am sure he must have felt like vividh bharati and there was a backlog of requests (farmaishes). So what happened next was regulars turned contributors—either sending lyrics or write ups. Ab alam yeh hain ki there are a few days when there was one post from Atul and the rest from contributions. Of course Atul still has to write a suitable post when we send him only the lyrics or link for a particular song.

“Naache Mayuri”(1986)” was a Hindi remake of the Telugu “Mayuri”(1984). These movies were based on the real life story of Sudha Chandran. Sudha Chandran, a dancing enthusiast, had lost one leg in an accident. But she braved all odds and used artifical limb (prosthetic ‘Jaipur foot’) and continued to pursue her first love viz. dancing and became a leading dancer. She was invited to perform in India as well as abroad. Her fame spread and she got offers to work in movies. Telugu movie “Mayuri” (1984) was made on her own life. This movie became a big success at the box office. It was subsequently dubbed into Malayalam and Telugu with the same title. Later on, this movie was remade into Hindi as “Naache Mayuri” (1986).

Going through Atul’s index of movie-wise songs I was astonished to find that so many film titles begin with “Mr.”. One “Mr.” title though I didn’t find there and that was Mr. Romeo (1974) . Till 2003 I hadn’t even known that such a movie existed till I saw its score on Music India Online. R. D. Burman has given the film a good score. He usually did that to for-us-now obscure films. It seems to be the launching vehicle for the leading lady Rinku Jaiswal. I think this was her only movie.

I wonder if someone has ever tried to analyse why people like some songs and not other songs. Why do some songs become timeless classic while others are forgotten after their initial run.
