Main ban ki chidiya

Even those who do not think much of old songs may have heard of this song or at least this movie. This movie called “Achhut Kanya” (untouchable girl) produced in 1936 was obviously made on a topic that was too far ahead of its time and the makers of this movie did a great social service by making a movie on this topic. It was the first out of only two movie that Mahatma Gandhi is reported to have seen, the other movie being “Ram Rajya”.

It is a 50 year old song, and I had never heard this song before. And this is a nice kids song too.

“Aashirwaad” (1968) was an offbeat movie. And obviously, Indian movie goers were not ready for such movies. So there is little surprise then that the mention of this movie would draw a blank from many Bollywood movie buffs.

Filmfare best male singer awards began in 1960. Mukesh was the first winner for Anari, and then Rafi won it for the next two years for “Chaudhvin ka chaand” and “Sasuraal”. Then there was no award for 1963. The 1964 award was won by a new voice, viz Mahendra Kapoor for Gumrah (1963). The song which earned him this coveted prize was this song “chalo ik baar phir se ajnabi ban jaayen hum dono”.

Here is this song “naache man mora magan” from “Meri Soorat Teri Aankhen”. I have listened to this song in past, but never fully or with rapt attention. But this time, when I listened to this song as a preparation for including it in the blog, I really was made to sit up and take notice.

Though Lata Mangeshkar made her debut as a playback singer in 1947, it was not like she became a singing legend almost overnight. For three years she was just another struggler in Bollywood. But the song that catapulted her to nationwide name and fame was the 1949 song “Aayega aanewaala aayega” from “Mahal”.
