Today’s song is from the film Bandish-1955.

What is the meaning of the word Bandish ? It is very funny that we use many Urdu words without understanding their real exact meanings. We have some vague idea about its meaning and we sincerely use it with that intended meaning. I have come across people frequently using wrong words, causing humour or pity. From the childhood, I always remembered what our English teacher had told us. He had said that when in doubt, immediately refer to the dictionary and get the right meaning. A habit from that time helped me always and I became careful in using the correct words. This helped me in my education as well as career. Same case is with pronunciation of certain words. English or Urdu is not our mother tongue, and hence the right pronunciation of words is as important as using the right words.

Today’s song is from the ‘1959’ movie ‘Saahil’.

I recall becoming aware of this title while going throough HFGK Vol-III (1951-1960) during my stay at Nagpur. I would regularly browse through the IIIrd volume of HFGK for the decade 1951-1960 those days(2015-2017). After that I went to Kenya for a project which lasted around three years. I came back after completion of the project in December’2019. Since then, I am more or less sharing songs from seventies and eighties, sometimes end of sixties. Songs of 1950s have become few and far between.

Today, November 5, 2021 is the 13th Remembrance Day of producer-director, B R Chopra. I admire him for his courage to make films on sensitive and socially relevant issues at a time when most of other producers would have avoided such issues. As far as I know, B R Chopra became the director without working under any one of the well-known directors of his time or even working in any other departments of the film making which is laudable.

Today 26th September’2021 is the thirty-secondth Remembrance Anniversary of Legendary Singer and Music Director of yesteryears Hemant Kumar.

Hemant Kumar Mukhopadhyay was born on 16th June 1920 at Benaras, Benaras State under British India.

He passed away on 26th September 1989 at the age of sixty-nine.

As a fan of Hemant Kumar’s voice, I had always liked his singing and his compositions that he has given us in the Hindi Film Music. He also sang in many regional languages including my mother tongue – ‘Marathi’. Ravindra Sangeet sung by him in ‘Bengali language’ is an immortal gift he left for all music connoisseurs.

MUSIC is an integral part of every Indian. From birth to death, we are drenched in music. During Vedic times, the Rishis used to teach their students verses in Taal and Sur, so that the students would remember them easily. You will have observed that whenever there is a Mahapooja or an Yadnya, the Purohits will recite the Mantras in a typical rhythm and sur.
