Today (14 april 2017) as I write this post, I cannot help but remember Legendary Singer Shamshad Begum. It is after all her Birthday. It has been nearly four years since She left for her heavenly abode. Like two of my favourites S D Burman and C Ramchandra, She was born in and passed away in the same month. In her case it was the month of April. She was born on 14th April 1919 at Lahore (as She told me when I interviewed her) and passed away on 23rd April 2013. Today (14 april 2017) would have been her 98th Birthday.

“Paighaam”(1959) was produced and directed by S S Vasan for GeminiPictures, Madras. The movie had Dilip Kumar, Vyjyanti Mala, Raj Kumar, Pandhari Bai, Motilal, B Saroja Devi, Johny Walker, Minu Mumtaz, Vasundhara Devi, Protim Devi, Bannerji, Mukherji, Shivraj, Sitalaxmi, Ishwarlal, Pushpmala, Master Gopi, Karupayya, Radjha, Madhavan, Amar, Kamal Krishn etc in it.

GIRLS SCHOOL (1949) was produced under the banner of Lokmanya Productions ( a joint venture of Kavi Pradeep and Amiya Chakraborty). The film was directed by Amiya Chakraborty. Interestingly, one of the assistant directors for him in this film was Guru Dutt. The star cast included Geeta Bali, Sohan, Sajjan, Shashikala, Mangala, Ram Singh, Vimla Vashisht etc. Amiya Chakraborty has been known to produce/direct socially relevant films which he must have got this legacy from his association with Bombay Talkies.
