Hullo Atuldom

‘Adhikaar’ meaning ‘Rights’ is a title that has been used four times by Bollywood. This information I gathered from the blog’s ‘List of songs- Moviewise’ tab. Of the four films titled ‘Adhikaar’ the ones released in 1938, 1954, and 1971 have already made their debut on the blog; in fact the ones released in 1954 and 1971 have been Yippeee’d too. The 1938 ‘Adhikaar’ has four out of seven songs on the blog. Today’s post sees ‘Adhikar’ (1986) make is debut on the blog. The song with this post is the one that plays as the movie’s titles play on-screen and we can see this ‘Adhikar’ is an ‘a’ short.

Songs Repeated in Hindi Films – 19
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Even this one – you might say. Aah yes, even this one. 🙂

This song from ‘Mahal’ in 1949, probably has the most recognized prelude across the entire history of Hindi Film Song. It has become the signature song of the earlier decades of Hindi cinema. No representative selection of Lata ji’s songs would ever be considered complete without it.

The all too familiar picturization – the girl on the swing then the empty swing, the lonely boat in the river, the stunningly beautiful features of Kamini (Madhubala) – the song and its images are now an unforgettable montage. There is a whole traditional lore that now accompanies this song, which has achieved a cult status over the decades.

Hullo to all in Atuldom

I don’t know if anyone has noticed the current obsession that I am displaying. Many of my contributions to the blog in this calendar year have been to celebrate the birthdays of artists who are otherwise called “character artist” or “supporting cast”.

Has anyone tried to visualise what story “The Ramayana” would have been if there was no Dasharatha, Kaikeyi, Sugriva, Hanuman, Vibhishana or even Ravan. Can one think of “The Mahabharat” minus Duryodhana, Shakuni, Kunti, or any of the “supporting characters”? Where would “Sholay” be without Gabbar, or the fate of “Mr. India” without Mogambo. Can one think of “Parichay” minus the cute kids of the family, “Chupke Chupke” without Jijaji, “Golmaal” without Bhavani Shankar; “Deewar” minus THE MAA. That means all stories, be they the epics or modern tales, need characters which are good, bad, ugly or in-between, around the main characters for the story to be interesting.

It’s not easy writing this. I’ve written many posts here on the death anniversaries of various artistes – but in all those cases, I’ve had the benefit of distance of time from the event. Even if it is the first death anniversary, at least 365 days have passed since. That does make a difference. Today’s post isn’t a death anniversary post. It’s a tribute post, of course, but the artiste in question has just left us a few hours ago! And we are still in mourning. Which is why I write this post now with a lot of sadness in my heart.

Today (23 october 2014) is the festival of deepaawali. This festival is supposed to bring joy and happiness in the lives of everyone. I can certainly vouch for that. My main computer that has been hijacked by my wife for the last few days was surprisingly available to me this morning. I wake up earlier than others on the pretext of letting the dog out and teaching the daughter. The dogs were wide awake as usual but my daughter (and wife) are not (as usual). That gave me the opportunity of sitting on my main computer and try and give finishing touch to the posts for the day.

Most Rakhi songs in this blog are from the golden era of HFM, viz from 1950s to 1970s, though Rakhi songs from 1930s, 40s and 80s have also been discussed in the past.

Here is a Rakhi song from the 1990s. This picturisation is intesteting. It shows a Mithun da covered from head to toes in Rakhis arrive at his residence where his three sisters are waiting for him. The sisters cannot even identify him, before the small kid accompanying Mithun da explains that Mithun Da had saved several girls from the clutches of baddies and the grateful girls had tied him with rakhis all over his body, including face. 🙂

While I was busy checking up the details of Saif ali Khan whose birthday falls today(16 august), I came across the information that today is the birthday of Manisha Koirala too. I as well as the regular contributors had missed out on her birthday. It turns out that she was born on 16 july 1970, exactly on the same day and year that Saif Ali Khan was born. Could they be identical twins separated at birth, Hindi movie istyle ? 🙂 Not likely, because such separation at birth happens only in non royal families (viz. Pran and Nirupa Roy, for instance:) ). Here both Saif Ali Khan and Manisha Koirala happened to be born in royal families, silver spoon and all. 🙂
