All numbers are unique unto themselves – inasmuch as each number has its own claim to fame just by being what it is. And but for the imagination and fancies applied by our minds, which at times picks on certain characteristics and binds some special stature to some of them, all these numbers would be as interesting, or for that matter disinteresting, as any other number. Let me quote the instance of a number that has now become famous as the ‘Hardy – Ramanujan Number’. This anecdote is attributed to a conversation in or about 1919 (wow, ninety seven years ago), that happened in London. Indian mathematician Srinivas Ramanujan, who was based in London for some time, was ill and confined to his bed at his residence. His friend, Godfrey Hardy, another mathematician (who had invited and arranged for Ramanujan’s travel etc. to London), came visiting him. The initial conversation was about Hardy’s journey to see Ramanujan. He mentioned off hand that the number of the taxicab in which he had travelled, was 1729 – for all intents a most uninteresting and boring number. To this comment, Ramanujan replied that ‘1729’ was a very special number. In fact it is the smallest number that can be represented as the sum of two cubes, in two different ways. This song has been waiting in the wings, since the day I posted “Thandi Thandi Hawaa Mujhe Chhede Yahaan”, as part of the ‘Missing Films of 1960s’ series. At first I had shortlisted this Rafi Sb’s song for that post. But then on second thoughts, I changed it and saved this song for the Rafi Sb series. Good choice, I think. This song fits in well on the ‘प’ letter position.

There are quite a few songs by Rafi Sb, starting with the alphabet ‘न’, and which are still to be posted. As I was in the process to shortlist the song for today’s alphabet, I came across this unfamiliar song from the film ‘Rangeela’ from 1953. The thing that struck me was the title line “Naadaan Na Ban Ae Matwaale”. The first thought that came to my mind – that this is a sad, philosophical type of song, kind of similar to “Moorakh Hai Insaan” (‘Main Aur Mera Bhai’, 1961) and “Mat Bhool Arre Insaan” (‘Mastaana’, 1954). Not really inclined for a poignant song today, I skipped this, and moved ahead in the list. But on second thought; do not know what prompted me to come back to this song, and I decided to listen to it. And I am surprised – this turns out to be actually a fun song, on the topic of eve teasing. And I knew I had my selection for today’s post. 🙂

“धीरे चल ज़रा, ओ पागल पुरवइय्या”

Vintage Rafi – that was my reaction on hearing this song, actually for the first time yesterday. And then I checked the other details, and find, this song is likely one the few very last songs that Rafi Sb would have recorded. This song comes from the 1980 vigilantes-and-robbers type story – ‘Hum Paanch’. As I chanced upon this song and started to play, my first feeling was – 1960s, or thereabouts.  The sedate rhythm and the soft rendition, gives that charmed old world feeling of the golden era. Just that the picturization visual in the video clip gives one the clue that this song is much later than 1960s.

I could not have missed the next episode in the Hindi alphabet series on Rafi Sb today. And it is by good luck that I am able to locate a song that adds one more anniversary together, and quite appropriately so.

yes, bahut yaad aaye. . .  that voice – the magic, the magnetism, the feeling of surreal contentment that descends into the being, and ensconces it with a joyous delight. It is a voice, that now lives only in our memories, or in the ethereal sound waves. The memories are such, they will never be detached till the breaths last. And the sound – they say in our culture that sound is forever; it lives in the space for all times to come.  And so will this voice. This voice – of Rafi Sb. This voice that went to sleep 36 years ago, today. 36 years seem to be a long time, a third of a human life already. But it seems just like, well, recently. And the affinity and the magic of this voice has only deepened with time.

Remembering Rafi Sb today, with all humility and respect and love.

What a gem of a delight this song is, from the 1969 film ‘Mera Dost’. As we continue to delve and search, we continue to come across as yet un-posted songs that are simply out of this world. Such wonders will not cease, I am sure for quite some time yet.

“ढोलक को खूब बजाओ, जानी को खूब नचाओ”

Today’s alphabet letter has been the most elusive to locate. Statistically, ‘ढ’ is one of the lesser used letters, and so, the songs starting with words starting with this alphabet are comparatively fewer in number. As I was poring through the song lists from various sources, the search always ended with just three songs starting with ‘ढ’. And incidentally, these three are well known songs, and are already posted on our blog. The search through the lists, whether from Geet Kosh or other sources, is sometimes a problem, because at times a leading couplet appears in the beginning, and ‘mukhda’ of the song appears in the later part of the title. Searching for such words in the title is a difficult and tedious task. But after some extra effort I was able to identify this song. Then I went back into the Geet Kosh again, and confirmed that the ‘mukhda’ of this song indeed starts with the word ‘ढोलक’.

Continuing with the alpha series of songs by Rafi Sb, I present today a lesser heard sad song from the early years of his career. The year is 1948.  The young singer is just finding a foothold in the industry. The film song that will become his first popular hit happened this year – “Ik Dil Ke Tukde Hazaar Huye. . .” (from the film ‘Pyaar Ki Jeet’). Other very significant songs are also to follow in this year and the next (1949).

The strongest image that remains in the mind is that of the film director Sinha Saab, a bedraggled man in tattered garments, with ruffled grey hair and white beard, a leathery skin on face lined with wrinkles that appeared much before time – a young person who aged too rapidly for his years. With help of a walking stick, he climbs down from the shadows of the scaffolding where he has perched himself, watching the action on the floor below – the same floor where once, not too long ago, he was the ringmaster, and everyone bowed to him. Not anymore. Today, he is a ‘has been’, who lost his touch of Midas, and the same world that once clamored to him, has quickly forgotten and relegated him, literally, to the garbage heap.

With difficulty, he negotiates the narrow ladders that lead down from the scaffolding to the studio floor. Once there, he shuffles to the chair, his chair, in the days of glory; the chair with the word ‘Director’ written across its back. He sits. And then he is immobile, never to get up again, never to wake up.

When the crowd of workers return after lunch, everyone is shocked to see this grimy old man, sitting motionless in the director’s chair. Everyone is known to him, but today no one recognizes him, now that he is gone. None, save one light-boy, who remembers and recognizes his earliest benefactor – Sinha Saab.

The power of these images and these sequences now have a cult following, not only in India but worldwide. Remembering Guru Dutt on his seventy seventh anniversary. (9th July)
