In case of most movies, only a few songs become popular and other songs become forgotten with time. I have found that several of these forgotten songs are superb songs to listen to, and with some luck, they should have become popular songs, instead of ending up into the dustbin of obscurity.

“Nai Roshni” (1967) is a forgotten movie despite being a “recent” movie by the standards of this blog. This movie had actors like Raaj Kumar, Ashok Kumar, Anwar Hussain, Asit Sen, Mala Sinha, Tanuja, Sulochana, Biswajeet, Pratimadevi etc in it.

“Shabaab” (1954) was a Sadiq Preoduction movie. It was produced and directed by M Sadiq. Star cast of the movie included names like Bharat Bhushan, Nutan, Badri Prasad, Yashodhara Katju, Wasti, etc. From the songs of this movie, I have deduced that the storyline of this movie was losely based on Sanskrit scholar Bilhan’s work which was written in 11th century AD. Bilhan should not be confused with Kalhan who also lived in the same areas (Kashmir), but one century later and who wrote “Rajtarangini”.

“Ehsaan” (1970) is a movie that was released during the time when R D Burman gale force had had gathered momentum. Most movies with popular songs those days tended to have music by R D Burman. So is the case with “Ehsaan” (1970).

“Madhu” (1959) is a rare movie which was produced by Maya Art Pictures. It was directed by G Mukherji and S Bannerji. The star cast of the movie consisted of names like Karan Dewan, Meena Kumari, Jagdish Sethi, Kumkum, Sundar etc.

There were three top heroes in Hindi movies in 1950s. Of them, viz. Raj Kapoor expired in 1980s and Dev Anand just a few days back. One of them, viz Dilip Kumar is still around. He in fact is celebrating his 89th birthday today. He was born on 11 th december 1922 in Peshawar,now in Pakistan. He made his debut in Hindi movies with “Jwaar Bhata” (1944) and his made his mark as a hero with “Jugnu” (1947) and soon he became a hot property in Hindi movies and earned him the sobriquet of “Tragedy king”. It is not an accurate description, becuase he has worked in several light hearted movies as well.

“Dil Diya Dard Liya” (1966) is one of the first “old” movies that I became aware of as a pre teen kid, and my impression about old movies being melancholic stuff was mainly based on this movie, its songs and also its title.
