“Howrah Bridge” (1958) was a landmark movie in the annals of Hindi movie club songs. This movie had not one but two club songs that went on to become immortal clu songs. One was of course the Helen song Mera naam Chin Chin Choo and the other was the Madhubala song Aayiye meharbaan (Howrah Bridge) .

When I went through the first few lines of this song (sent by nahm), I wondered what song this could be. It did not seem to ring any bells. But when i listened to the song, I immediately recognised it. I had listened to this song so many times in my younger days, but all those days I never became aware of the details of the song.

When one listens to this song without being aware of the details, what does one guess about this song ? It is sung by Rafi and it is picturised on Dev Anand. This song is remininscent of several other Rafi- dev Anand songs and one may guess that this song is composed by S D Burman. But surprise, surprise ! This song is not composed by S D Burman. This song is a Madan Mohan composition !

While listening to this song, I could not but help feel that I had already discussed this song in the past. I checked and re checked, but I found that no, this song has not been discussed earlier. Yes, I had discussed another song with almost similar first line, and written by the same lyricist and composed in the same year !

“Nayaa Kaanoon” (1965) was a movie starring an over the hill Bharat Bhushan with Vyjyanti Mala. This movie was a box office disasater.

As a result, the songs of this movie suffered. So much so that few people are aware of these songs. It is a pity because these songs are so nice to listen to, and they would have done well had the movie done better.

I have mentioned this fact about Hindi movie songs that most of them are about human feelings viz love, sadness, happiness and not about commerce/business. In fact there are very few songs that are about selling some products. I have discussed a few songs where chanajor or similar stuff is being sold. When a normal human being misses his/her beloved, you expect them to bear it privately. But a Hindi movie hero/heroine missing his/her beloved decides to make a public spectacle of themselves. They quickly burst into a missing you song whose lyrics could be something like “Main yahaan hoon tu hai kahaan” or “Ab to aa jaa” etc. They go all over the town singing the song. One can expect them to be doing that in India, but imagine doing them in the streets of Venice, Italy and the local population not even batting their eyelids !
