Hullo to all in Atuldom
July the 3rd is the date when the son of a favorite singer of mine, who is equally my favourite turns a year younger. It is the 67th birthday of Amit Kumar Ganguly. The all-rounder musician – he is a playback singer and music director in addition to being an actor and director.
He made his acting debut as an 11 or 12-year-old in “Door Gagan Ki Chaon Mein” (1964) and had his father singing for him “aa chal ke tujhe main leke chaloon ek aise gagan ke tale”. He played a mute kid whose eyes conveyed a lot of emotion. His eyes still convey a lot of emotion- we mostly see mischief there. 🙂 His next screen appearance was again with his father in a short role in “Door Ka Rahi” (1971). “Main ik panchchi matwala re” was a song that was recorded for the movie which was later edited out from the final cut of the movie and used inn a later Kishore Kumar production “Mamta Ki Chaon Mein”. Whatever acting he has done is mostly in movies produced by his father. He has acted in about six movies and took on the mantle of director to complete his fathers’ “Mamta ki Chaon Mein” which released in 1989; two years after his father, the legendary Kishore Kumar, passed away.

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2009-19) – Song No. 8
————————————————
When our dear Atul ji recently started an ‘innovative’ initiative under the ‘ten-year challenge’ or ‘Blog ten-year challenge’ I had mentioned it in my comments on the ‘first song’ in this series that, I would try to share lyrics if not articles as possible in this series. I had also mentioned that I could see a few opportunities for me in the coming days of this month. That was because I was browsing the posts of February’2009 on my own.
Today I have this opportunity to share a ‘song post’ under this series. And since its from ‘seventies’ I am happy to share it here.

After yet another hiatus of a few months, I am back on the blog today (24 december 2018).
And I’m sure most people who know me here, will know why. 🙂
Yes, it is that big day for Hindi film music lovers all around the world today – it is the birth anniversary of Mohammad Rafi, or, as he is affectionately and reverentially referred to by many, Rafisaab.

Missing Films of 1960s – 88
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
This journey of searching out the missing films is such an interesting exploration of the unheard and less heard gems – or as they say on Radio Ceylon (SLBC now) ‘कम सुने और अनसुने गीत’.
Today’s song is one such rarely heard gem, but oh what exquisitely crafted gem this one is. The film is ‘Haveli’ from 1970. The name sounds as if this would be a film of the horror genre, of course mixed with police and robber crime drama. The one poster of this film that I am able to locate on the net (actually an image with the song on YT), shows the leading lady with a revolver in her hand. The rest of the poster combines the film title logo, and another image of the lead pair. This image does not exhibit any overt horror type flavor – just that the title gives such an impression.

My affair with Tanuja (one of the many that I had during my school years) started when I first saw her in a film on Doordarshan. If I remember correctly, it was ‘Bahaaren Phir Bhi Aayengi’ from 1966. The song was “Aapke Haseen Rukh . . .”. The way this song is filmed, Tanuja looks such a pretty enchanting young lady, as the camera pans in on her with sunlight behind, the rays of the sun diffracting from her open tresses. At that time, I did not even know her name. Just that face, and the vision of sunlight reflecting from her hair, and I lost my heart to her.

We in this blog often reach milestones that I describe as “artificial” milestones. These are “artificial” in the sense that we can only be aware of them if we keep track of them. Earlier we were not aware of them.
For instance, the blog has crossed 3700 days of existence. We first became aware of this kind of milestone only on the occasion of the blog reaching 3400 days.

27th August – a traveling tour, a distant land, and an unexpected loss; a loss that is as numbing even today, as shattering as it was when it happened then. 1976, and a hotel in Detroit, USA. The soul of the voice and the voice of the soul – both were stilled forever. A life of just 53 years. And a singing career that was wonderfully placed. Both cut short by the matters of the heart – matters that could not be set right.
Today, we remember Mukesh, through his songs, in an effort to re-live the times. And to enjoy the listening pleasure that this voice still continues to be forty two years after his departure.

Less than a week ago, we remembered our beloved Rafisaab on his death anniversary.
Today happens to the birth anniversary of another of our beloved legends, Kishore Kumar (popularly referred to as Kishoreda). So we very fondly remember him today and pay tribute to him.
Both Rafisaab and Kishoreda died when just in their 50s – both of them could have easily gone for many more years. But life and death matters are not in our hands – we can only thank them for what they have given us, the legacy they have left behind for generations to relish.
