The golden era of Bollywood movie songs was supposed to have ended circa 1980 when lyrics took the backseat and music became synonymous with plagiarised disco beats. Kishore Kumar has sung some wonderful songs for leading heroes viz. Dev Anand, Rajesh Khanna, Amitabh Bachchan. Though Vinod Khanna never achieved the same stature as the earlier mentioned stars, Vinod Khanna too was in contention for the top spot for much of 1970s before he threw it all away for Rajneesh.

“Haath Ki Safaai” (1974) was a movie featuring Vinod Khanna, Randhir Kapoor, Hema Malini and Rekha (I think ) Simi Garewal. Despite such names, the movie was soon forgotten.

Here is a typical showdown song between brothers, that was fairly common in Bollywood movies featuring Amitabh Bachchan in 1970s. In this song, Amitabh Bachchan and Vinod Khanna are the two bothers and they sing this song in a party called by their parents. Shammi Kapoor plays their father in this movie.

This is a nice timepass song from 1981. The movie is called “Daulat” and this song is a duet sung by Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhonsle and is picturised on Vinod Khanna and Zeenat Aman.

This is a duet sung by Lata and Kishore Kumar,two of the biggest names among playback singers. But the same cannot be said about the lyricist and the music director, both of whom were debutants. Maya Govind was the lyricist. She was arguably the first female lyricist in Bollywood. Bhupen Hazarika, known more for his playback singing was the music director of this movie.

Amitabh Bachchan movies in 1970s tended to have quite a few songs about friendships. In fact, I can readily count 4-5 such songs off the cuff – from Zanjeer, Sholay etc. In fact, two of his movies containing such songs had their titles like “Yaaraana” and “Dostana”. 😉 Another actor “specialising” in movies with such titles was Shatrughan Sinha, who in addition to figuring in “Dostana” was there in “Dost” as well.

“Lahu ke do rang” is a movie that would be loved by Helen’s fans. Here she plays a long and important role. Similarly, this movie would be loved by the fans of Vinod Khanna, Danny and Ranjeet too. Yes, all these baddies ( Vinod Khanna had become a hero by that time, though) are present in this movie.
