In the early days of films, it was almost a tradition for the film people to invite or encourage their friends and relatives to join the industry. There could be two motives, One-to give opportunities to the dear ones and Two-to include them in the line so that their own position gets strengthened. Thus, the early artistes-at least the majority- were one way or the other connected to each others in the film line. Those days,Industry too needed people in various branches of film making as it was growing fast and social inhibitions still restricted the entries of people from respectable families.

Today (18 february 2014) is the Birth Anniversary of NALINI JAYAWANT. She was one of my favourite actresses from the 40s and 50s. Her film which I liked the most was “Hum sab chor hain “-1956. Though she was 30 year old by this time, she still looked very charming, naughty and beautiful. The Hero,Shammi Kapoor was only 26 years, but no one ever felt that she looked older than him. There were excellent songs in the film, composed by O.P.Nayyar and the story was quite entertaining.

(Note: It is a little strange to start an article with a Note. 🙂 But I felt it is necessary. This series has seen a lot of delays and long gaps between individual episodes. All of it is my own doing. Partly it is availability of time, and partly it is the writing about the subject itself.

Genius of Jaidev
=============
Four songs from the 1977 film ‘Alaap’ has been already posted in this blog. this one second in my series will be the fifth one. I am not repeating the details of that film here, but will describe the scene depicted in the presentation.

Tawayaf Sarjubai, acted by Chhaya Devi, sings a soulful bandish in Raag ‘Desh’. She is remembering, in flashback, the pain of a prince of some state, Rajasaheb, acted by Sanjeev Kumar, who had just lost his beloved wife. Many tawayafs were patronized by princes for their singing talents during that period.

Jaidev , unlike the MDs of that era, utilized unknown or rarely heard singers as far as Hindi films are concerned. This duet is by two performing artists, Fayyaz (well known Marathi stage artist) and Bhupinder. (well known non-film gazal singer) I am sure this song will bring tears in the eyes to the sensitive souls and lovers of good music. May I invite you all to listen to this creation and wet the eyes with me?

PS-The audio of the solo version of the song is now uploaded by Sudhir ji alongwith the Devnagri lyrics. The two versions are identical except for one extra line repeated in the duet version at the end.
