Today (3 august 2020) happens to be the festival of Raakhi. Seeing that we are in the grips of a pandemic, most festivals in India are coming and going without much celebration. Things are not what they used to be till last year. Hopefully, we will be able to overcome this pandemic and will be able to celebrate all festivals and all other occasions of get together with the same kind of impunity that was taken for granted till a few months ago.

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2010-2020) – Song No.49
————————————————–

In my younger days, I remember to have watched Marathi film ‘Kunku’ (1937) on Bombay Doordarshan (now ‘Sahyadri’ Channel). At that time, I was not aware that ‘Duniya Na Maane’ (1937) was its Hindi version. Even it did not occur to me that the subject chosen for the film was very bold. I have no much recollections of the songs of the film but Shanta Apte’s performance has remained in my mind as it was quite different as compared with the theatrical acting by most of the actors of that time. Even her song renditions were looking natural as against the ‘fixed gaze’ style of song renditions witnessed in most of the films at that time.

In Memory of Meena Kumari :

Mehjabeen Bano, who gained name, fame and huge popularity as Meena Kumari, was born on 1st August 1932. Child artist, tragedy queen, poet and singer, are the various attributes to her name. Had she lived to see this day, she would have been 88 today i.e. the two fat ladies of housie. Really, she was just 40 when she left this world, her temporary abode.

Honestly, I have not seen many of her movies. Some of the earlier movies like “Sahib Bibi aur Ghulam” and “Chiraag kahan aur roshni kahan” I have seen on TV longback. The unforgettable “Dil Apna aur preet praayi” and “Ghazal”, “Kaajal” , “Mere apne” and “Bahu Begum” also on TV. “Pakeeza” is the only film I have seen on the big screen and revisited in recent times. The songs of ‘Pakeeza” are embedded in mind from early childhood, even before I am conscious of listening to radio.

Today is 31 july 2020. It is the 40th anniversary of the passing away of Mohammad Rafi ( 24 december 1924-31 july 1980) as all HFM lovers are only too aware. 31 july 1980 is a day which is still fresh in the minds of music lovers who were around at that time.

31 july 1880, a date exactly 100 years prior to 31 july 1980 was also an important day. It was on this day that Dhanpat Rai was born, who would later be known as Munshi Premchand (31 july 1880-8 october 1936), one of the most influential Urdu-Hindi author in modern Indian literature.

Hullo Atuldom

“Lafange” (1975) was a movie produced and directed by Harmesh Malhotra. It had five songs from which the blog has one song covered. It was under Sudhirji’s series of “Rafi SB -in the seventies”.

But the more popular song of the movie was its title song “log kehte hain, ke hum lafange hain”. That is not the song we shall have today. We will be celebrating the birthday of the leading lady of this movie with a song sung by Lata Mangeshkar. It is written by Anand Bakshi and Laxmi-Pyare were the music composers.
