Today’s song is a melodious duet of Lata Mangeshkar and Hemant Kumar from a less heard film Daaraa-53. The Music Director is Mohd. Shafi and the film is directed by Harish. It was produced by Shaikh Mukhtar, under the banner of Omar Khayyam films, a company belonging to Harish. The cast of the film was Shaikh Mukhtar, Begum Para, Nigar Sultana, N A Ansari, Mukri,Tun Tun,Sankata Prasad etc. There were just 7 songs in the film but 7 Lyricists wrote one song each, Today’s song is written by Madhup Sharma.

Whenever I listen to songs rendered by Hafeez Khan Mastana, popularly known as Khan Mastana, I feel very sad and sorry for him. He was the son of Ustad Waheed Khan of Etawah Gharana who was a well-known sitar and surbahar player. The renowned sitarist Ustad Vilayat Khan was Khan Mastana’s first cousin.

Yesterday I happened to watch Anubhav (1971). I had last seen this film when I was a young boy. I must admit I wasn’t particularly impressed by it at that time. In those days, I was into “fun” movies which either had action (like Mera Gaon Mera Desh) or a typical storyline with catchy music (like Kati Patang). Anubhav had neither. The music was beautiful but not the type a 10-year old would find fun.

This is a Bhajan from film Tulsidas-54. There have been many films on Tulsidas. Sant Tulsidas was first produced in 1934, then in 1939 and then in 1972. The same topic with title Tulsidas was in films in 1954 and 19991.

I came to know about the film NIRMOHI (1952) sometime in the late 1960s when my friend and office colleague, Vijay Nafde introduced me to his 78 RPM record collections. During our periodic get together in his house, he used to make me listen to some rare songs (of that time) and that included songs from unheard films for which music directors like C Ramchandra, Madan Mohan, Roshan etc composed the songs. ‘Nirmohi’ (1952) was one of those unheard films from which I remember to have listened the only song, dukhiyaare naina dhoondhen piyaa ko .

Few months back (on 13th May 2016) there was a comment by Anekant ji on this song ‘laayi kahaan hai zindagi’ (Taxie-Taxie 1977). Reading the title ‘laayi kahaan hai zindagi’ of his song post reminded me of a Kishore Kumar song – ‘toone hame kya diya ree zindagi’.

“Agra Road”(1957) was produced and directed by Ravindra Dave for Nageena Pictures, Bombay. The movie had Vijay Anand, Shakila, Nanda, Satish Vyas, Amarnath,Krishnakant, Bhagwan, Nazeer,Dhumal etc. in it.
