Hullo to everyone in Atuldom
Its been long since I had any idea that inspired me to write. But 9th June is one date which I just cannot let go without writing something about.
Before I give the importance of this date here are some stray thoughts that came to me. I am sure all of us have many friends as we journey through life. I am also certain that they will be in categories like building (Housing society) friends (meaning friends who lived with us in the apartment we grew up in), school friends (this will cover all the friends we had in school be they junior or senior to us), class friends or classmates as we choose to call them. Then further in life we have college friends and office friends. Now for people in Mumbai there would be an additional set of friends –train friends and I have personally witnessed the kind of masti (fun) these people have to and from their work place. I have seen that in the general compartment the groups of friends will play cards or have bhajans etc. They also celebrate peoples’ birthdays and other happy occasions in the journey that can be anywhere between 45 minutes to one and half hour depending on where the last person gets off.

People who are experienced Hindi movie watchers will know that songs and dance play the same role in these movies as the term “black hole” plays in Astronomy. Wherever in doubt, introduce a song and dance (or a black hole) as the case may be and your target audience is satisfied. 🙂

Today’s song is from the film Gharana(1961), a movie made by the famous Gemini Studios, Madras. The producer/director was S S Vasan- called the ‘Cecil B Demil’ of India, after his epic trend setter film Chandralekha way back in 1948. It was from this film that Hindi films started being made in south. In the beginning, it was only remakes of successful and Hit south films. Once this formula proved to be profitable, remakes of hit South Indian films began to constitute almost 80% of the Hindi films being made in south.

Forgotten Melodies of the 1940s – 45
——————————————-
In the 1940s, Hindi films based on mythological and historical stories were produced among other genres of the film. Minerva Movietone’s ‘Sikandar’ (1941) set the benchmark for this genre of movies. The subsequent movies of this genre like ‘Prithvi Vallabh’ (1943), ‘Draupadi’ (1944)‘, Humayun’(1945), ‘Veer Kunal’ (1945), ‘Samrat Chandragupta’ (1945), ‘Krishnarjun Yuddh’ (1945), Prithviraj Sanyukta’ (1946), ‘Maharana Pratap’ (1946) etc are supposed to have paled in comparison to ‘Sikandar’ (1941) in terms of grandeur, picturisation of outdoor scenes besides screen-play and dialogues.

In my previous posts I have mentioned about the summer vacatons during my childhood days when I would be watching movies in the company of my Uncles, brothers and cousins. We used to visit the Akola, the nearest city for many reasons (viz buying provisions etc), but watching movies was the main attraction for us – children- to go to Akola.
