“Bhai Sahab”(1954) was a Pancholi Art Production. It was directed by Ravindra Dave and the star cast included C H Atma, Smriti Biswas, Purnima,Ratan Kumar, Jagdeep etc.

“Nikaah” (1982) was a movie which was produced and directed by B R Chopra. The movie had Raj Babbar, Salma Agha, Deepak Parashar, Asrani etc in it. Those were the days when Indians regarded “phoren” stuff and people as objects of great curiosity value, even if “phoren” only meant neighbours. Thus Pakistani and Bangladeshi artists were welcomed with open arms in Hindi movies. Runa Laila, Salma Agha, Nazia Hasan were some of the artists who benefitted as a result.

One of the remembrances of my childhood days of early 50s was a song ‘kuchh yaad rahe to sun kar jaa’ which my mother used to sing quite often. It would not be an exaggeration to say that I grew up with this song. Those days, I did not remember the beginning line of this song but one line from this song – ‘tu haan kar jaa yaa naa kar jaa’ remained embedded in my mind. I had no inkling at that time that it was a filmy song.

Raat phaagun ki chaand poonam ka

“Bhai Sahab” (1954) is a movie I know well from my days of listening to “Puraani Filmon ke geet” on Radio Ceylon. The songs of this movie sounded like they were sung by K L Saigal but in reality they were sung by C H Atma, a K L Saigal devotee. The most well known song from this movie, viz Nazar ne keh diya afsaana mere pyaar ka has already been discussed in the blog.

Yesterday Peevesie’s mom made her debut as a lyrics contributor by sending the lyrics of a song from “Taxi Taxie” (1977). The movie may be of recent vintage, but little information is available about this movie. That is where we can always log on to our inhouse encyclopaedia and get all the details. “Rattan” (1944) was a movie whose songs were based on folk music instead of classical music as was the norm those days. That helped ordinary folks to identify with and connect with the music of this music. The result was unprecedented. The producer of this movie earned more money through the music rights than through the screening of the movie.
