LOST AND FOUND-GEMS FROM UNRELEASED FILMS…..Song No. 3
—————————————————————
Writing on old film songs and that too on unreleased film songs is a very hard job. Firstly, hardly any information is available on Internet or in books. Secondly, controversies crop up on the statements made in the write up. India being notoriously hopeless as far as recording history of films, music or songs is concerned, it is extremely difficult to arrive at a definite and undisputable conclusion. Most artistes of those times are beyond our reach and if anyone is still alive, he may not remember the facts properly due to old age. In my work in this field, I have found that old age artistes either don’t remember or believe firmly in wrong/desired events and timings making a mess of the whole information.

Hindi movie music was predominanatly based on classical music during the first decade (viz 1930s). It was in early 1940s that Ghulam Haider introduced Punjabi Folk music based songs in “Khazaanchi” (1941). This paradigm shift was avidly lapped up by public and this paved the way for folk music based songs in Hindi movies. Ghulam Haider was followed by Naushad who introdced UP folk music in his compositions. That opened the floodgates and then we had different music directors composing songs based on folk music from different regions.

Today (24 october 2014) is the birthday of Greta, who is known to most of us as Memsaab of the blog memsaabstory.com. Her blog began in 2007 and it soon became a favourite blog and a meeting place of HFM bloggers. This blog began one year after her blog and I would stumble upon her blog quite frequently during my search for songs. For quite some time I was under the impression that she was a blogger of Indian origin who was based in US. It took me some time to realise that she was an American lady with no previous Indian connections and that she had learnt about Hindi movies from the ground zero up, and that too in just a few years. She in fact describes her initiation into India in general and and Hindi movies in particular in great and interesting details in her blog.

Hindi film industry is like an ocean.Several small and big rivers join it and the ocean too gracefully accepts everything. Once inside, the individual rivers lose their identity and become a part of the ocean. Similarly, people from all corners of India join this industry, but only few get proper opportunity and recognition here. The rest simply disappear in this ocean. Success, they say, has no formula. Famous composer C.Ramchandra had once said, ‘If only there is anyone who can predict correctly what will succeed and what the public will like, such a person can earn millions here !’
