In 1950s and 1960s, there were a few movies whose titles resembled the names of girls, and a few such titles happened to be the names of well known actresses of those days too. For instance, there were movie titles like “Sadhana” (1958), “Raagini” (1958), “Kalpana”(1960) etc.

“Teesri Kasam” (1966) was a movie which was adapted from Phanishwar Nath “Renu”‘s Hindi novel called “Maare Gaye Gulfaam”. I have neither seen the movie nor read the novel, but Santosh Ojha, a contributor to this blog has given a nice summary of this novel in his blog . Reading this summary, I realised what a moving tale this novel and this movie was. Now I can understand why Shailendra was so heartbroken on finding his dream project failing at the box office. The fact that Indian movie audience were not mature enough and sensitive enough to appreciate a movie like this was quite unfortunate indeed.

I was in Kohima (Nagaland) during the first week of December last year to see the week long annual Hornbill Festival. The festival showcases the rich tribal traditions and culture of Nagaland including folk dances, music, sports etc. One day of the festival was reserved for the folk dancers and musicians of all the north-eastern states. My main interest was photography during the festival events and also capturing the tribal village life in the real sense by visiting a nearby Naga village. But some of the dances and musical performances became so rhythmic and foot tapping that I was completely engrossed watching them and in the process I missed taking pictures of some of those events. Surely, some of the dance and musical performances would have been a source of inspiration for Bollywood music directors and choreographers. I also observed that the younger generation In Kohima was very much into music. There are many rock music bands in Kohima. Even in a tribal village, it was a common sight to see young boys and girls moving with guitars.

During my school days, some Hindi films with English titles such as ’12’o Clock’, ‘Black Cat’, ‘Marine Drive’, ‘Gateway of India’, ‘Tower House’ were released between late 50s and early 60s. I used to wonder as to why Hindi films should have English titles. Perhaps, it was one of the ploys of the production houses to create some curiosity about these films among the prospective audience and lure them to theatres. I was also curious about these films but those days we would be permitted to see only a couple of films during summer and Diwali vacations and that too only one or two select films. I had no occasion to see these movies when they were released and I have no idea about their fate on the box office. Probably these films did not run for long time.

As I checked the ‘list of films – moviewise’ on this blog, my reaction was – O My God, this film is not yet represented here. Wow. Well not that something is amiss. There is a ton of films that are still to find their way to this blog. But the music is so wow, and I wondered how it has stayed away from this blog thus far. The film is full of both lilting and sentimental gems. And so I must write this post and have this film debut its presence here.

There is an age old saying that advises to look before one leaps. No matter how simple a thing may seem, this adage holds true. And no matter how many times one may have tried or done something, there is always a chance one may make a slip the next time. That is what happened with me today. 🙂 Usually, when I am selecting songs for a write up, I will do a diligent check on the list of songs already posted for two purposes. One to ensure that the song is not already on the blog, and secondly, to get some info about the already posted songs from the same film to add to the write up. And in this effort, I am usually diligent about spellings and name variations and try to look into the lists more closely than just the alphabetical matching.

Trawling, even for a few minutes, through the vast collection on the internet posted by so many lovers of Hindi music, the effort never goes unrewarded. And here is one delightful reward that I bumped into few days back, as I was looking for songs by Shailendra. A song that I heard long back, first time when I saw this film on Doordarshan, as a child, and then lost track in the interim. The film is ‘Insaan Jaag Utthaa’ from 1959. The film is a well known production from the banner of Shakti Films, Bombay, produced and directed by Shakti Samant. The main star cast of the film includes Madhubala, Sunil Dutt, Nazir Hussain, Minoo Mumtaz, Bipin Gupta, Nishi, Sunder, Krishnakant, Madanpuri, Manju, Praveen Paul, Shyam Kumar, Kesav Rana, SM Thakkar, TN Charlie and a host of character artists viz.
