During the golden era of Hindi movie music (circa 1950-1980), things were quite simple and rudimentary in most fields. Hindi movie songs tended to become popular only if the movie did better, and the movies did better only if they followed certain set formulaes. “Grihasthhi” (1963) was a family drama in which Ashok Kumar and Nirupa Roy (the standard couple of those days) play the parents of no less than seven daughters ! So naturally, much of the movie revolves around the efforts of the parents to get their daughters married off.

I keep repeating ad infinitum that there are so many great songs lying all around as far as Hindi movie music is concerned. And these gems are not always the creation of well known music directors. Even lesser known and unsung composers have created great songs for which they received no recognition. worse, their creation was later used by other better known musicians as their own.

What a delightful song it is ! In this song, two ladies are singing about their beloved. I hope they are not singing about the same person, though knowing Hindi movies, a situation like this is not uncommon in Hindi movies.

It may be difficult to imagine today, but Indians actually idolised national leaders in the past. Till 1960s,every Indian household would have framed photographs of Mahatma Gandhi (father of the nation), Jawaharlal Nehru (Prime Minister of India) and Rajendra Prasad (President of India) hanging on the walls of their drawing rooms. In addition, people would also have photographs of Subhash Chandra Bose, Vallabh Bhai Patel etc too.
