Umrao Jaan was a legendary courtesan of Lucknow, though few people outside Lucknow may be much aware of her. But all that changed in 1980 when the movie “Umrao Jaan” was released. And now, whenever one mentions Umra Jaan, one is reminded of Rekha. Just like many people think that Emperor Akbar looked like Prithviraj Kapoor, many people now think that Umrao Jaan looked like Rekha.

“Dil Diyaa Dard Liyaa” (1966) was a movie that was just before my time. At the age of 5-6 years, you are too young to realise what is going on, and at the age of 15-16, you have learnt to think logically, and you are then required to become mature and responsible. Neither state of affairs is desirable if you want to enjoy Hindi movies.

Dukh bhare din beete re bhaiyya
Posted on: October 2, 2010
I always thought that the song “dukh bhare din beete re bhaiyya” from “Mother India” (1957) was a brief song, almost an afterthought. I do not know how I came to believe that. Perhaps I may have watched a brief portion of this song when I watched this movie (some 25 years after the movie was released) or perhaps because I have not heard this song in detail in the past.
