Tum rooth ke mat jaana

This is a lovely song in all respects. The movie is “Phagun” (1958 ) and the song is an O P Nayyar composition sung by Rafi and Asha Bhonsle. Qamar Jalalabadi is the lyricist.

It is a very long song, which is one second short of 10 minutes long. And the song is so nice to listen to that these 9:55 minutes pass in a trice. Initially Asha Bhonsle sings the song and towards the second half of the song, Kishore Kumar makes a cameo appearance.

This is a nice timepass song from 1981. The movie is called “Daulat” and this song is a duet sung by Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhonsle and is picturised on Vinod Khanna and Zeenat Aman.

I have talked about Rafi singing brilliant songs for Shammi Kapoor. This led to many imitators, who would make Shammi Kapoor movies by signing up Shammi Kapoor clones. Thus we had actors like Joy Mukherjee, Vishwajeet etc who had reasonably successful careeres playing Shammi Kapoor type roles.

This song is a typically O P Nayyar tune as far as the use of the musical nstruments are concerned. This movie “Ye Raat Phir Na Aayegi” came in 1966 when O P Nayyar was on the decline.

“Bank Manager” (1959) is a movie few people today may have heard about. If I say that this movie had the music of Madan Mohan, then many people may consider it inevitable in the sense that most Madan Mohan movies indeed ended up as consigned to the dustbin of time.

This song appears quite a women’s lib song to me, at least by Indian standards. The song shows Tanuja singing this song which basically means that flower has blossomed in the garden , but the bees have not yet arrived.

Somehow I feel that “Umrao Jaan” was to Rekha what “Paakeza” was to Meena Kumari. Both these movies were of a similar genre, showing a courtesan singing Mujra in a kotha.

“Jawaan Mohabbat” was a Shammi Kapoor movie in his usual style, but released a few years too late. It was released in 1971, when Rajesh Khanna had already taken over as the reigning superstar.
