Missing Films of 1960s – 6
– – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Hmmm, that is interesting.  As I review the list of missing films for 1962 prepared by Khyati Ben, then starting from ‘Baaje Ghunghroo’ (which was the last film we introduced in the previous segment of this series), I had to drop down to the seventh film below it (in alphabetical order) to reach a film for which songs are available.  After ‘Baaje Ghunghroo’, the films listed are ‘Balidaan’, ‘Bapu Ne Kahaa Tha’, ‘Bijli Chamke Jamuna Paar’, ‘Deccan Queen’, ‘Durga Pooja’ and ‘Fakiron Ki Basti’ – six films for which songs are not traceable.

The title “Shaahi Lutera” appears to be quite a popular title for B grade movie makers. The first such title appeared in 1935. The next “Shaahi Lutera” was released two decades later in 1965, and another one in 1976. Considering the paucity of authentic information available about old movies in general and B grade movies in particulr, i is very easy to get facts about them mixed up. I have, for instance seen the songs of “Shaahi Lutera” (1965) being mixed up with songs of “Shaahi Lutera” (1976) in sites who in any case do not seem willing and /or capable of ensuring authenticity of information ( if any )being dished out.

People who love Bollywood songs ( the kind I post in this blog) also love the actors on whom these songs are picturised. One much loved category of these songs is dance songs picturised on Helen. I have already posted several such songs.

I am seriously considering opening a new category of songs called “Helen” songs. And this category will certainly have many entries, considering that a cabaret by Helen was a must in most mainstream Bollywood movies for much of 1960s and 1970s.

I have heard this song many a times, without knowing which movie it is from and how it was picturised. I assumed that this song was sung by a housewife whose husband was sulking.

When I finally watched the picturisation, I felt let down. It was not a housewife singing it for her husband, it was a mujra sung by a courtesan for her client. This was one standard form of item songs in those days. Other form of item song being cabaret, typically performed by Helen.
