My workplace has a bank in its premises. Yesterday (7 march 2018), the female branch manager of the bank came to me seeking permission to organise a seminar for women. “Tomorrow 8 march is women’s day, you know”- she explained.

So today (8 march 2018), the bank organised a women’s day programme in the meeting hall of our workplace. The bank manager spoke on the occasion, I was asked to speak on the occasion. Bank had invited a gynaecologist who spoke about cancer among females and preventive measures to be taken.

Today, March 8th is the 97th birth anniversary of Sahir Ludhianvi, one of my favourite poet-lyricists. Before him, there were other eminent Urdu poets such as Arzoo Lucknowi, Safdar Aah Sitapuri, Behzad Lucknowi, Josh Malihabadi etc who had been associated with the Hindi film industry sometime or the other. But it was Sahir Ludhianvi who clicked with the Hindi film industry as a poet and raised the status of the lyricists.  Eventually, he created such a status for himself in the Hindi film industry that some of the established producers/directors first took him on board before finalising the music directors for their films.

The uncertainties of life, in some way, always gives us happy as well as sad moments and surprises as well. The journey of life keeps on going on and on still, like that only. . . We never know how things are going to happen around us and what ‘life’ has there in store for us with every new day coming.

Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday, dear atul-song-a-day blog
Happy  birthday to you

🙂

Yes, it’s that special day of the year again. It’s our blog’s happy happy birthday. It was born on 19th July 2008, so today it completes 9 years. And we, wherever we are in the world, are definitely not going to let the occasion go by without celebration.  Maybe we don’t have cakes and candles, but we have enough blog handles. 🙂 (Ok, admittedly, that was a terrible one!).

Missing Films of 1960s – 32

At the beginning of this month, June 1st, I had a personal reminder to myself – passing away anniversary of Khwaja Ahmed Abbas. I was wanting to do a brief remembrance post. Other “things” intervened and the day came and went. Then, it so happened that on the 15th June, there was a set of reminders and requests for the birth centenary celebrations of Sajjaad Husain. Not many “things” intervened that day, and I was able to locate a rare recording of a song from film ‘Dharam’ (1945), as yet unposted, and was able to post the remembrance article in good time. You may remember the title line of that song “Chali Pawan Purvaai, Chali Pawan”.

The 9th of June is the birthday of our beloved Arunkumar Deshmukhji, often fondly referred to as our in-house encyclopaedia. 🙂

Arunji, it takes me great pleasure to wish you a very happy birthday on this occasion – and I say this on behalf of all Atulites for whom you are a very special person.

रोक सकता हमें ज़िन्दान-ए-बला क्या मजरूह
हम तो आवाज़ हैं दीवार से छन जाते हैं

Rok sakta hamen zindaan-e-bala kya ‘Majrooh’
Ham to aawaaz hain deewaar se chhan jaate hain.

[Can prison of calamity stop us?
We are the voice which can infiltrate the wall].

This she’r was written by the young Majrooh Sultanpuri probably sometime in the 1940s. Perhaps he was goaded by the idealistic impulses when he was  associated with the Progressive Writers Association (PWA), a left-oriented ideological group.  Nonetheless, for Majrooh Sultanpuri, it has been a quick transformation – from an idealistic poet of PWA  to a lyricist in the film industry.

Today, the 8th of March, is a very special day for some of us.

No, it’s not because it is International Women’s Day. Well, that too, but also because it is the birthday of somebody associated with the Hindi film industry who is very close to us.

Yes, I’m talking about Sahir Ludhianvi. Sahir Sb would have been 96 today had he been alive.
