In the 1960s through 1970s, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Stadium at Worli (Opposite Haji Ali) used to host free-style wrestling bouts. Dara Singh, Randhawa, Tiger Joginder Singh, Saudagar Singh etc among the Indians and some foreign wrestlers like King Kong used to participate in the bouts. Most wrestling bouts used to take place on Saturdays/Sundays and probably one during the weekdays. Large life size cut-outs of the famous wrestlers used to be displayed at the venue as well as some prominent places. In addition, huge posters of wrestling bouts used to be displayed on hand pulled carts (Haathh Gaadi) which will move from one place to other. Thousands of leaflets of advertisement of the wrestling bouts used to be distributed at prominent places like railway stations, bus stands and other crowded places.

Songs Repeated in Hindi Films – 30
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Ah yes, another iconic song from the Golden Era is being reused. It no longer surprises me to continue discovering such reuse songs from the films of recent vantage. Here is this wonderful creation of Majrooh Sultanpuri and OP Nayyar Sb which is now used once again in the film ‘Bombay Velvet’ of 2015.

Today’s song is from a film made in Madras – ‘Naya Aadmi’ (1956).

The film was made by Jupiter Films, Madras, simultaneously along with the Telugu film ‘Santosham’. The cast was mainly from the South, taking few Hindi actors for the Hindi film, like Anwar Hussain, Gope and Helen (her first Telugu film incidentally, when she danced in film ‘Santosham’ also). The Music Director pair was Vishwanath – Rammurthy (their first Hindi film) with 8 songs and Madan Mohan with just 3 songs. The cast was Anjali Devi (South), NT Rama Rao, Jamuna, Raja Sulochana etc. For the Hindi lyrics it was, of course, Rajendra Krishna- the South’s favourite.

Logon Ki Zubaan Par Apna Naam Hai Pehla” – this post of mine spoke of how I made it to the Gangout of like-minded HFM lovers who also go by the name ‘Atulites’ of ‘Atuldom’. How Sudhir ji set the ball rolling in the beginning of May and after numerous back-n-forth messages (at that time I was not a party to the discussions) June 2nd was fixed as the date for the Gangout. I was happy that I could attend the Gangout & be a part of the enthusiastic group that is highly knowledgeable about all things related to music – not necessarily only Hindi Films, especially finding new information & saving it up for posterity.

#the Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #

Bhoole-Bisre Geet # (Darling Darling-1977)
——————————————-——————————————

Today’s song is from the movie ‘Darling Darling’ (1977). Going by the Censor Board Certificate dated 11.05.1977 of this movie, I was just over nine years old when this movie must have been released. But I did not get to watch this movie then and I do not remember to have watched it later elsewhere. This movie had few good songs and they happen to be played frequently on loud-speakers then. Particularly I think the title song of this movie was heard more than other songs then. To me this song was an irritating song then. We as children were even shy to say the word ‘darling’ because we thought it was ‘ultra-modern’ type word for children like us who were studying in small village school. 🙂

Today (13 June 2023)is the birth centenary of Prem Dhawan (13 June 1923-7 May 2001).

When I was growing up, I knew him as the lyricist of patriotic songs. Among his most well known songs to me were “O mera rang de basanti chola” from “Shaheed”(1965), “Ae mere pyaare watan tujhpe dil qurbaan” from “Kabuliwala”(1961) and “Chhodo kal ki baaten kal ki baat puraani” from Hum Hindustani(1960). Though I knew him mainly as a lyricist, sometimes he would double up as lyricist cum music director, as in “Shaheed”(1965) and “Pavitra Paapi”(1970).
