In 1950s, it was difficult to imagine a music director making his mark without using the voice of Lata. But there were two music directors who achieved this seemingly impossible feat. One was O P Nayyar who never used Lata’s voice in even once in his career. Another music director who stopped using Lata’s voice in 1950s was S D Burman.

C Ramchandra, who brought Western music to Bollywood before anyone else has created some wonderful songs which remain popular with modern remix generation as well. Many of his songs created in 1940s and 1950s have been found worthy of remixing/ cover versioning, etc. But none of such musical cut pasting has ever come anywhere close to the original.

Shammi Kapoor’s era lasted for the entire 1960s and “Prince” could well be called his last successful movie. His two subsequent movies as a hero (“Pagla Kahin Ka” and “Jawaan Mohabbat” did not do well).

Talat Mehmood was trying his hands on acting in addition to playback singing in 1950s. His singing career suffered as a result. What is more, sometimes the music directors in movies where he acted would contemplate using the voice of some other singer for Talat Mehmood. That way, Talat Mehmood sometimes found himself in the same boat as Kishore Kumar.

Kaanha bajaaye bansari

“Nastik” (1954) is known for some very nice memorable songs. The well known song “dekh tere sansaar ki haalat kya ho gayi sansaar” is from this very movie, which I have posted in this blog.

When one listens to this song, and finds out that Shankar Jaikishan are the music directors and Hasrat Jaipuri the lyricist, then one can safely assume that this Rafi song is picturised on Shammi. And indeed, I have thought so about this song for more than four decades. It indeed seems to fulfil all the ingredients that one had in a Shammi Kapoor movie.
