Today 4th January 2026 is the 33rd Remembrance Anniversary of Rahul Dev Burman who is fondly known as ‘Pancham’. He was born on 27th June 1939 and he passed away on 4th January 1994 at the age of only 54.
Today on Pancham’s 33rd Remembrance Day we will be paying our tributes to him by listening to some of his compositions that were not yet presented till now.
While much of his musical treasure is already available for music lovers to savour, some more of this treasure is still being unearthed and is being shared online. I hope this process of digging up his as yet unknown compositions will continue in future as well.
From an estimated figure of 1755 songs from 331 Hindi movies composed by Pancham we have so far covered 944 songs from 254 Hindi movies on this blog.
I start day’s proceedings by presenting a song from the 1985 movie ‘AMEER AADMI GHAREEB AADMI’. It was directed by Amjad Khan for ‘Cinema International’s’. Shehla Khan and Vinay Sinha were the producers of this movie. Actor Amjad Khan who directed this movie had also credited as writer and editor of the movie as well. Dialogues for this movie were written by Akhtar-Ul-Iman. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 19.02.1985.

A few weeks back while going through Deepti Naval’s filmography on her Website, I found the mention of one of her films, ‘Anant’. I have never heard of this film. I did not find the mention of this film on any regular film/song-based websites, like IMDb, myswar.in etc. Fortunately, a video clip of the film was available on one of the video sharing platforms which was uploaded by the producer of the film. I watched the film in one sitting and liked it immensely.
Anant (1999) was a tele film which was produced by Project Smita Society and Voluntary Health Association of India and was directed by Raman Kumar. The cast included Deepti Naval, Kanwaljeet Singh, Seema Biswas, Satyadev Dube, Bhakti, Javed Khan, Nanda and Avtar Gill. The story of the film was written by Alok Mukhopadhyay mainly to create an awareness about AIDS/HIV+ . Vinta Nanda wrote the screenplay and dialogues. The film was premiered on Star TV on December 1, 1999, on World Aids Day. Later, it was dubbed in nine languages for being telecast on the regional TV channels. The film was produced in mainstream cinema format with the focus on creating the awareness of AIDs for the people at large. The film is of 70 minutes’ duration.

Pancham’s Music – Eighties-to-Nineties (1981-1994…) Duets-6
Today’s duet song which is composed by Rahul Dev Burman, fondly known as Pancham, is from the movie ‘Mil Gayee Manzil Mujhe-1988’. I have not watched this movie but when I browsed the list of its songs and listened to a few of them, this duet song sounded familiar to me.
This movie ‘Mil Gayee Manzil Mujhe-1988’ was directed by Moeen Amjad for ‘Chetna Movies’. Shantilal J Sopariwala was the producer of this movie. The presenter of this movie was ‘Chetna Zarda & Co’ and in the title of this movie (in the version available on internet this credit for the presenter comes up with a picture of the container of its product i.e. ‘Zarda’ and printed on it is ‘Chetna Zafrani Zarda 131 flavored chewing tobacco’. 🙂

We normally have a feeling of nostalgia towards the films we watched in our youth. We always love their music, their artists and the general experience we watched while seeing those films in the cinema halls of yore. Sometimes, in newer films, we see tributes being paid to them. Occasionally, we find the tributes a bit insipid leaving us uninspired. However, once in a while, a song makes you really feel good and enjoy it while giving you a feeling of nostalgia. Today’s song is one such song.

21st December is the birthday of an actor who made his debut in films in 1986. Though the first film he signed was ‘Tan Badan’, first film for which he started shooting was ‘Love 86’ in June of 1985. ‘Ilzaam’ (release date 28th February 1986) & ‘Love 86’ (release date 14th February 1986) released before his firstsigned ‘Tan Badan’ (release date 25th April 1986).
He was born as the youngest of 5 children and was given the pet name ‘Chi-Chi’ (meaning little finger). His father was former actor Aroon (alias Arun Kumar Ahuja) and singer-actress Nirmala Devi was his mother. He belongs to an ethnically mixed family, as, through his father, his grandfather was Punjabi while his grandmother was Sindhi, but he himself identifies more with his Punjabi side. His paternal side ancestry can be traced to Gujranwala in undivided India & his maternal side had its roots in Varanasi, U.P.

‘Aurat Pair Kee Jootee Naheen Hai’ (1985) was produced by B K Adarsh and was directed by Prithviraj Chatterjee. The cast included Marc Zuber, Deepti Naval, Gulshan Grover, Sachin, Satyen Kappu, Anjali Sen, Goga Kapoor, Jagdeep, Brahm Bhardwaj, Shivraj, Dulari, Vikas Anand etc.
The VCD of the film is available on one of the video sharing platforms but with a poor quality of video. It is obvious from the title of the film that it is a feminist film. Before watching the film, I read the synopsis of the story which gave me an impression of tackling the feminist subject in an amateurish way. But a ghazal in the film forced me to watch the film. I am happy that despite a poor quality of video, I have watched the film in one sitting and felt satisfied the way the theme was handled in a matured way without the additional doses of songs and sub-plots. The story of the film was written by B K Adarsh and probably it was his first film (out of about 15 films he produced) which tackled an important social issue. Unfortunately, the film failed badly at the box office.

In the series of Pancham’s duet compositions from the eighties-nineties, today we introduce a duet song from the movie ‘Palay Khan-1986’.
This movie ‘Palay Khan-1986’ also makes its debut on the blog today.
This movie was produced by Skahti Samanta and directed by Ashim Samanta for Untied Producers & Shakti Films. It was passed by Censor Board on 03.12.1986. It had Jackie Shroff, Poonam Dhillon, Farha Naaz, Suresh Oberoi, Shakti Kapoor and Anupam Kher. They were supported by Sushma Seth, Puneet Issar, Satyen Kappu, Dinesh Thakur, Mac Mohan, Roopesh Kumar, Bob Christo, Kamal Kapoor, Tom Alter, Manek Irani, Zubeda, Rasinder Singh, Tito Singh, Mahender Tyagi, Tarana, Shivangi, Gurvinder, Abhishek Ahuja and others. In this article, I am presenting a song, ‘suno aye duniyawaalon ek naya paighaam laaya hoon’ from an incomplete film, ‘Naya Mandir’ (1961). It was directed by Kishore Sahu. It had Manoj Kumar, Mala Sinha and Mehmood in main roles. I came to know of this song on the audio album of ‘Film Hi Film’ (1983). Unfortunately, this song seems to have been deleted from the VCD of the film available on one of the video sharing platforms. Since video clip of the song is available in continuation of the scene from ‘Film Hi Film. (1983), it can be construed that the song was included in the film.
Shahab Ahmed, the producer of ‘Film Hi Film’ (1983) had earlier produced ‘Cinema Cinema’ (1979). During his visit to Bombay Film Laboratory, he was astonished to see cans of more than 2000 unfinished films lying in the laboratory. Shahab Ahmed thought that a lot of efforts had gone into making these films which unfortunately remained incomplete for various reasons. So, he came with the idea of incorporating scenes and songs from a few select incomplete films to make a full-length feature film [Source: ‘…and Pran’ (2005) by Bunny Rueben].
