‘Baazaar-E-Husn’ (2014) was produced by A K Mishra, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Vision Corporation Limited and was directed by Ajay Mehra. The cast included Om Puri, Reshmi Ghosh, Jeet Goswami, Yashpal Sharma, Rajeshwari Sachdev, Virendra Saxena, Rajeev Verma, Savita Prabhune, Rekha Sahay, Upasana Singh etc. The film was based on Munshi Premchand’s Urdu novel by the same name which he had also written in Hindi with the title, ‘Seva Sadan’.
It is interesting to note that the first talkie film based on this novel with the name, ‘Seva Sadan (alternative name, ‘Baazaar-E-Husn’) was released in 1934 which was produced by Mahalakshmi Cinetone, jointly owned by director Nanubhai Vakil and the actress, Zubeida. In this film, Jaddan Bai (mother of Nargis), Shahu Modak and Zubeida were the main actors. Another interesting information about this film was that the dialogues were written by Munshi Premchand himself. A Tamil film, ‘Seva Sadanam’ (1938) was also based on Munshi Premchand’s novel by the same name in which M S Subbulaxmi did the role of novel’s protagonist, Suman. A TV serial, ‘Seva Sadan’ (1986) based on the same novel was telecast on Doordarshan.

#the Decade of Thirties – 1931 – 1940 #

(Debutant Movie-‘Double Cross-1938’)
Today I am presenting a song from a movie of 1938. Regulars on this blog will be surprised to see a write-up from me presenting a song from a movie which is around eighty-seven years old. I have been sharing older songs but this must be the oldest of them. I had come across this song more than a year back.
This song is from the movie ‘Double Cross’ from the year 1938. Most of us are aware of the movie titled ‘Double Cross-1977’. This movie of 1977 has a song that is part of my childhood and I had shared that song on this blog. Adding songs from movies with same title is one of my missions, and that is the reason for this post as well. With this post ‘Double Cross’ of 1938 joins the ‘Double Cross’ of ‘1977 🙂 on the blog.
“Double Cross-1938” was directed by M. Bhawnani for ‘Bhawnani Productions, Bombay’. M. Bhawnani was also the story writer of this movie. The cast of this movie had Bimla Kumari, S.B. Nayampalli, Faity (Fatty?) Prasad, Ameena, David, Kishore, A.S. Gyani, R. Dilawar, Master Hussain, Rai Mohan and others. This movie has eight songs as listed in Geet Kosh Vol-I (1931-1940). However the lyricists name is not known for this movie. Music for this movie was composed by Pt Badri Prasad and Walter Coffman was the ‘orchestra organizer’(as mentioned in Geet Kosh). Singer’s names for all the eight songs are mentioned in Geet Kosh. They are Gauhar (Bikaner), Bimla Kumari, Bashir Qawwaal, Faity Prasad, and Ameena.

This movie’s story takes place on a cruise ship. Cruise ship travel is still out of affordability area for the common people in India. I do not know anyone who does this type of travel or holidays. The way of life involving Yachts, Marinas and Cruise ships is very foreign to India. I saw one cruise ship in Liverpool. I saw some people who were from that ship roaming around the harbour area, with the Beatles museum, and the eateries, a very ordinary boat ride around the inner harbour/backwaters. They stood out as they were not casual tourists. At least I thought so, as I pride myself on my powers of observation and differentiation.

Today’s Asha Bhonsle song is from a shelved/ un-released movie titled as ‘Shehar Se Door’. Sources mentions that the records of this movie were released in the year 1972, but the movie was never released.
‘Shehar Se Door’ or ‘Shahar Se Door’ was directed by Chaman Nille for ‘Maya Deep International, Bombay’. It had Subhash Ghai, Neena, Heena Kausar, Roopesh Kumar, Nadira, Johny Walker, Raj Mehra, Krishan Dhawan, Anita Guha, V. Gopal, Jankidas, Uma Dhawan, Uma Khosla, Jerry, Monto, Satya Devi, Madhu Kapoor, Tarun Bose and others.

#The Decade of Eighties – 1981 – 1990 #

Today 27th November 2025 is the seventy-third birth anniversary of Composer Singer Bappi Lahiri (27.11.1952-15.02.2022). On this occasion as a tribute to him I am presenting a song from the movie ‘Sinhaasan-1986’.
I got to listen to this song earlier this year when I was still at Vadodara and was travelling from the city to my workplace around 47 kms from the city. I had earlier presented filmography of Bappi Lahiri for his Hindi Films from the 1970s and also for few years of the 1980s. However I did not include it in my series of Bappi Lahiri songs where I had presented songs that are part of my memory till 1985, because this song did not fall in that category.
Today’s movie ‘Sinhaasan-1986’ was directed by Krishna who also produced it for ‘Padmalaya Studio, Madras’. So this is one of those movies of actor Jeetendra where he was a part of many films coming from the southern part of the country. Bappi Lahiri too was the regular music composer for such films. I have not watched this movie, so can’t say much about it. However it seems to be a ‘fantasy’ movie. The cast of this movie has Jeetendra, Jaya Prada, Pran, Kader Khan, Mandakini, Shakti Kapoor, Bharat Bhooshan, Dr Shreeram Lagoo, Amjad Khan, Sujit Kumar, Gulshan Grover, Gurbachan Singh, Praveen Kumar, Waheeda Rehman, Radha and others.

#The Decade of Eighties – 1981 – 1990 #

In this post we pay our tributes to actor Dharmendra who passed away yesterday on 24th November 2025 at the age of 89 years.
Everybody has to leave this mortal world. Dharmendra was ailing for last several days so everybody feared the inevitable. He has left this mortal world but memories of his films and the songs from his films will remain with the film goers who watched his films. Moreover his fans also admire him as a nice human being that he came across as in many of his interviews and public appearances.

In this post I am once again presenting a club-dance song sung by Asha Bhonsle. It is from the movie “Mastaan Daadaa-1977”. I have no recollections of having heard this song before. This songs appears to be a forgotten song which is a standard fate of songs from movies that have been forgotten.
“Mastaan Daadaa-1977” was directed by Satyen Bose for ‘Satyen Bose Pictures, Bombay’. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 07.03.1977. It had Ashok Kumar, Sanjay, Parveen Babi, Dev Kumar, Anita Dutt, Ranjeet, Bindu, Raj Mehra, Brahmachari, Habib, V. Gopal, Shekhar Purohit, Pardesi, Madhup Sharma, Sushil Bhatnagar, Major Anand, Bhagwan Sinha, Prakash Mishra, Ratna, Jerry, Bhola, Supariwala, Dubey, Master Anwar, Master Yusuf, Master Rajesh and others. Agha, Jagdeep, Gauri Verma and Sameer had a guest appearance in this movie.

Sometime in early 1980s, I had heard a non-film song, ‘mohe aayee na jag se laaj…..ke ghunghroo toot gaye’ which was rendered by Pankaj Udhas. At that time, I did not think much about this song but its hook line ‘ke ghunghroo toot gaye’ periodically reminded me of the song. After the death of Pankaj Udhas in 2024, his old non-film songs started ‘bumping up’ on the video sharing platforms during which I heard this song in full after many years and liked it, more so because of its lyrics. Since then, I was planning to cover this non-film song for the Blog. But I was not sure about the genesis of this song, particularly when I came to know that the song was written by Pakistani poet and lyricist, Qateel Shifai. So, I kept the song in hold until I got some clarity about it. After doing some reseach on the internet, I am now in a position to write the article on the song.

I do not remember that I was ever aware of this movie ‘Cobra’ or this title in my growing up years. I became aware of this movie only in 2015 when I got the copy of Geet Kosh Vol V (1971-1980). This movie has a song sung by singer Anwar and that is the reason for this post here. I came across the audio of this song a couple of years ago, and now the video of this song has also become available on internet. Even the movie is now available on online platform.
I guess that this must be an obscure movie of its time. Though it is now available online, but I have not yet watched this movie there. Interested readers can watch this movie on internet. I would request those knowledgeable readers who have already watched this movie to please share their feedback about this movie and its songs here on this blog. Geet Kosh Vol-V mentions this movie as a social movie.
