“Yaadon Ki Baaraat” (1973) was a movie which had a lost and found story where three brothers get orphaned (their parents murdered by the villain) and then they get separated. The brothers later grow up, take revenge on the villain and get reunited.

Today is Rajesh Khanna’s birthday. His name always evokes memories for me because he was the colossus when I was first beginning to learn Hindi and watch Hindi movies in my life. Here are my thoughts on that period and on Rajesh Khanna. This is a somewhat long post but I hope you will have the patience to read it all the way through.

Some newspapers tend to have columns called “This day that year” or similar. In that column, they discuss the important events that happened on that day in the past.
Today is 29th of december 2011. If I am asked to describe what I did in the past years on this day then I will draw a blank for most of the years, including years as recent as one or two years back. But ironically there is one year on this date that is as fresh in my mind as if it happened just yesterday. In reality, it happened exactly 40 years back. Yes, I remember the day of 29th december 1971 very well. It was a day that did not begin all that well but became memorable as the day wore on.

Most Raakhi songs in Hindi movies are sung by females playing non working sisters and they genuinely pray for the well being of their sisters. With time, even sisters in Hindi movies have become working women. And they do not just do the usual jobs meant for ladies, but they often work in jobs of masculine nature, viz in police.

Browsing through some songlists, I started to play this song last evening; and then just like that, checked the blog. Wow, this song must be brought on. And I am sure you will agree too.

“Bandish” (1980) was a movie starring Rajesh Khanna and Hema Malini. This was a Rajesh Khanna movie in his second phase as an actor after he had lost his superstardom. He tried very hard to regain his superstardom, but it was too late for him by that time. Typically his stellar performance in these movies would meet wit lukewarm response from movie goers. It was in such stark contrast to the response of public in his superstardom days when his appearance in the credits of a movie was all that was needed to bring in the crowds.

Here is another gem of a duet from the film Apna Haath Jagannath (1960). Three song from this movie are already discussed in these pages. This one is a fun filled duet by Kishore and Asha Bhosle. I had seen this song many years ago on Doordarshan in the Chitrahaar program. The words and the music was all lost from memory, just the visual of Kishore Kumar walking, and being followed by a lady in a car remained in the mind. Recently, browsing through YouTube, I chanced to see this visual as the thumbnail image, and lo, I found this lost friend once again.

When India won the world cup on 2nd april 2011, it was a great feeling for millions of Indian cricket fans and they celebrated late into the nights and well into the next day and the next. The fact that the final was played on saturday and there were two days of holidays on the following days (Sunday being the normal holiday and monday being Indian calender’s new year day), people had enough time to celebrate and get over the hangover.

“Kaala Sonaa” (1975) to my mind is inspired from “Westerns”. In this movie, Feroz Khan plays Clint Eastwood. Unlike Clint Eastwood, who would barely speak, our desi tough guy would not be averse to multi task. He would find time to romance, sing and dance, in addition to performing his day job of seeking revenge for the murder of his father.

With this post I am requesting Atul ji to add a new and peculiar category to this blog. This is a song sung on a ‘thhelaa’; and as far as I can recall, this is the only ‘thhelaa’ song in Hindi movies.
