Many films stand out for their great songs; so much so that each song in those movies is an iconic gem. Such movies are remembered not for anything else, but for their music, regardless that its star cast is really grade A. The memories of such movies are because of the songs and not because of the stars; the true stars are the songs.

It is an unenvious task for a music director when he is asked to create a song that should be inspired from an iconic song and at the same time it should stand out on its own. I am sure the makers of “Jab Jab Phool Khile” (1965) wanted Kalyanji Anandji to create a song similar to the iconic song Yahoo chaahe koyi mujhe junglee kahe(Junglee). It is not at all an enviable job by any stretch of the imagination.

“Mashaal” (1950) is known mainly for the song ( Upar gagan vishaal )that announced the arrival of Manna Dey as a playback singer of note. But these movie also had other nice songs in it, even though these songs, unlike the Manna Dey song, have been forgotten with time.

“Bandish” (1980) was a movie starring Rajesh Khanna and Hema Malini. This was a Rajesh Khanna movie in his second phase as an actor after he had lost his superstardom. He tried very hard to regain his superstardom, but it was too late for him by that time. Typically his stellar performance in these movies would meet wit lukewarm response from movie goers. It was in such stark contrast to the response of public in his superstardom days when his appearance in the credits of a movie was all that was needed to bring in the crowds.

“Ek Sapera Ek Lutera” (1965) is a movie starring Feroz Khan and Kumkum. This is a B grade movie and like most B grade movies it had some awesome songs in it. The most well known song from this movie is Ham tumse judaa hoke mar jaayenge ro ro ke

Here is another song from this movie. I became aware of this song only just now and this song haq quickly grown up on me.

Parwaana (1947) is sadly the last film of Saigal Saab. In January of 1947, Saigal Saab left this mortal world, with this picture being released after his departure. In the leading credits for this film, this is dedicated to the everlasting memory of Saigal Saab himself.

Today, 31st July, is Rafi saab’s death anniversary. It is a date that evokes emotions in many Rafi saab fans even thirty years after his death. Many of them, especially if they are in their 50s or more, will remember the 31st of July 1980 as one of those “where were you on that day?” events, associated in the past with JFK’s assassination in 1963 and the successful moon-landing in 1969, and more recently with 9/11 or India’s own 26/11.
