Today’s song is from the film Ek Roz-1947.
How many readers will know that a record number of films were made in 1947 in Hindi till then ? 181 Films ! It took another almost 40 years to cross this number. In the year 1985, the number of films made was 185.
Why was it that in 1947 alone such a high number of Hindi films were made ? The answer is – Partition of India in 1947 and the subsequent migration of Muslim film artistes to the newly created nation on the basis of Religion – Pakistan. Partition of India was the biggest blow to India, which had remained One Nation for thousands of years, despite having many religions thriving in it. Anyway, that is not the topic here.

“Idgaah” is a timeless classic penned by Munshi Premchand (31 july 1880-8 october 1936). This is the story of Hamid, a seven year old boy whose parents are no longer alive and he is brought up by his grandmother. On the festival day of Eid, he goes to Eid mela with his friends. While other kids buy themselves candies and toysHamid, thinking of his grandmother, buys a pair of tongs to help her make rotis, since she burns her hands trying to cook them bare-handed.
This moving tale was written by Munshi Premchand during his stay at Gorakhpur between 1916 to 1921, though the story itself could be published in 1933. The story, like many stories of Premchand, became a classic. It is a story that people, including children, can easily identify with. This story was there in my Hindi text book (class 7, I think). This story continues to be there in Indian school text books. I gather that even other regional language text books in India include this story.

July 18th is an important date in the life of atulsongaday.me. Actually it marks the eve of the birth of the blog itself. I wonder what must have been Atul ji’s sphere of activity on the day prior to this date in the year 2008 when the blog was launched. Last year on this date we were on a countdown to reach our song number 10,000. With this post, we stand at 11,295.

Hearty greetings to all friends and readers for the gracious festival of Id today.
The days of fasting and penance have ended, and now comes the grand celebration of Id. Today is the first day of the month of Shawwal. Today is the day when festive spirit is at its most cheerful, the attire of the people is the finest, and more than anything, the bonhomie and the bonds of friendship are at their best. It is the time to leave behind any differences and the memories of any past offenses, to forgive and to forget the resentments. As the lines of this celebratory song emphasize,
ye wo din hai ke hans hans kar giley shiqwe bhula dena
agar dushman bhi aa jaaye to ye keh kar manaa lena
id ki shaam hai
Today is the day to forget the resentments with a smile
Even if an enemy comes face to face
Give a hug and reconcile, and say
It is the day of Id today

Id Mubaarak, to all dear friends and visitors.
The trials and penance of the fasting month, Ramzan come to an end and it is the day to celebrate with happiness. A day of joy, to celebrate with family, and friends. It is a day to greet even the strangers that one meets. A day of fresh new attire, a day of favorite savories, a day of family get togethers, leisure time with friends, shopping ventures, exchange of gifts, and yes, ‘idee’ for the children. (‘Idee’ is the gift that the children received from elders today, when they meet them and pay their respects. It is a token, presented in cash or kind.)

EID MUBARAK to all our readers, wherever they are on this Globe. Today is a Happy day for the celebrations.
Having grown up in HYDERABAD-the Muslim state of the Nizam- in the 40s,( Hyderabad was annexed to India in 1948,after Patel’s ‘Police Action’), I have very fond memories of Eid. Though Hyderabad merged with India, It was an independent state till 1-11-1956, therefore the Muslim customs, manners, festivals, education and Eating habits continued to have a major influence on Hyderabad public. (In Nov 1956, Hyderabad was Trifurcated. 5 districts of Marathwada merged with Bombay state, 3 Kannada speaking districts merged with Karnataka and remaining 8 Telugu speaking districts merged into the newly formed Andhra Pradesh.( and again now these 8 districts are separating from Andhra Pradesh to form Telangana State !).
