While collecting information for writing articles on Hindi songs in Bangla films, I have often come across discussions and references about the beauty and the elegance of Suchitra Sen, Supriya Devi, Sandhya Roy and Sabitri Chatterjee in the golden period of Bangla film industry. In fact, during this period, all the four actresses ‘cornered’ a majority of Bangla films. In a way, they had partly contributed to the revival of Bangla film industry after a slump arising out of the partition of Bengal in 1947.

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2010-2020) – Song No.60
————————————————–—————————————————
Welcome all to this post for today’s(27 August 2020) blog ten-year challenge. Hopefully we will have two posts under the challenge today.
Atul ji had mentioned in previous posts of the challenge that the blog was having ‘customary’ six posts a day those days. This average was well maintained throughout the month. The blog had a whopping total of 176 posts in August 2010, which if we think now would look impossible with the current rate. Nowadays even a hundred posts in a single month looks like a distant dream. The last occasion of a hundred posts in one single month was in March’2018.

Non Film Songs of Mukesh – 01
————————————————
“But, I dont remember singing this song.”- Legendary singer Kundan Lal Saigal is said to have said these words on hearing Mukesh’s iconic solo song from Peheli Nazar (1945).
Of all the awards, love, affection and recognition that Mukesh continues to draw the world over, I feel the above words by the legend was the single most and greatest achievement of Mukesh.
Remembering Mukesh on his remembrance day, I humbly start with this new series on his non-film songs.

Today’s song is from the film Sarkar-1951. If this was the title from the times after year 2000, one would find this movie made on some Political subject. But the year was 1951, just 4 years after Independence.
When I was a young boy of about 8-9 years, like most others of my age, I too was very fond of reading stories of Kings and queens. As I grew up, slowly my interest in such stories waned. As I was exposed now to a bigger, wider and different world, my interests rested in many other subjects and after a few years, I totally started avoiding such stories.

Today, August 25th is 51st Remembrance Day of Shaayar-e-Inquilaab, Makhdoom Mohiuddin, an Urdu poet, a dramatist and a politician whose name may not ring bell for many of the lovers of Hindi film songs. They may, however, be aware of a couple of his popular Hindi film songs such as ek chameli ke mandve tale from’Chaa Chaa Chaa’ (1964) and aapki yaad aati rahi raat bhar from ‘Gaman’ (1979).
Makhdoom Mohiuddin (04/02/1908 – 25/08/1969) was born in Medak in the then Hyderabad state (present day Telangana). He belonged to the family of religious teachers and preachers. He lost his father, when he was 6. Subsequently, his mother remarried and went away in her separate way making Makhdoom Mohiuddin almost like an orphan. He was brought up by his paternal uncle. It is said that Makhdoom was influenced by his uncle’s leaning towards the leftist ideology.

‘Teesri Gali’ (1958) was produced by C D Sadarangani under the banner of Radiant Movies and was directed by Kundan Kumar. The film’s actors included Shyama and Abhi Bhattacharya in the lead role with Prem Adib, Gope, Kammo, Leela Mishra, Bhagwan Sinha, Neeru, C S Dubey, Ramlal, Panchotiya, Mohan Choti etc in subsidiary roles. I have no idea about the story of the film. However, going by a few lobby photographs, the film appears to belong to a mixed genre of crime and romance. It also appears that contrary to the general expectation, Abhi Bhattacharya had a played a different type of the role in the film.

Hullo Atuldom
23rd August was the birthday of the beautiful Saira Banu. She was born to yesteryear actress Naseem Banu and producer Mian Ehsan-Ul-Haq in 1944.
She made her debut opposite Shammi Kapoor in 1961 as the OH! so gorgeous Kashmiri ‘Kali’ with her introduction song being “Kaashmir ki kali hoon main mujhse na rootho babuji”. In all the years, since then she has remained gorgeous and aged gracefully. In between then and now, she was an active star in the Hindi film firmament till about 1976 when Prakash Mehra directed “Hera Pheri” released. She appeared in a cameo with her husband Dilip Kumar in Yash Johar produced and Ramesh Talwar directed “Duniya” (1984) as parents of Rishi Kapoor.

Remembrance day of Kalyanji :
24th August :
Since yesterday, when I chanced upon “Dharmatma”(1975) in the “list of songs-moviewise”, I am in a fix. How to start this post !
Unbelievably, only two famous songs from ‘Dharmatma” are posted.
kya khoob lagti ho and
tere chehre mein wo jaadoo hai
Dharmatma had only 4 songs but all were quality songs. As a tribute to Kalyanji (of Kalyanji-Anandji duo) on his 20th death anniversary, I am presenting this song “meri galiyon se logon ki yaari badh gayi”, a duet by Lata Mangeshkar and Mahendra Kapoor. Indeevar is the lyricist.

Today’s song is from the film Ek tha Ladka-1951. As per my plan, I am selecting randomly songs from the 50’s decade films, to discuss here.
Har Mandir Singh ‘Hamraz’ji has published a Film Index, listing films from Silent and Talkie films, since 1913 to 2012. Sometimes, I spend my free time to note down oddities, found in the film titles. Today, I went through it, to know more about film titles, starting with the word “Ek”. To my surprise, there are as many as 206 films whose titles start with “EK “. 32 films start with “Ek aur..”, 7 films with ‘Ek tha” and 3 films with ” Ek thi “. Title of today’s film ‘Ek tha Ladka’ sounds like the counterpart of the film ‘Ek thi Ladki’ !
