Today’s song is from the musical blockbuster of the 1950s, Suvarna Sundari-58.

There was a love affair going on between the South films and Bombay Film industry during the 50’s decade. Right from film Chandralekha-48, South started pushing into Hindi domain with Remakes and Dubbed southern films. Some films were even made only in Hindi. As the years went by and the southern film market expanded greater than even Bombay, south had no time or need or interest in tapping the Hindi belt anymore.

Today’s song is a surprise item. Just when we were ( atleast I was) feeling that all available film songs of Noorjehan are covered in the Blog, I came across this song. As a Bonus, even the complete video of this song was traced by me. For a long time, only a short clip of the song was available, but now you can enjoy the full video too.

The song is from film Lal Haveli-44. The film was made by Bombay Cinetone of K.B.Lal, the producer and director of the film. It seems the finance for this film was provided by one Rooplal Mehra, as per comment made by one of our readers. The film story was by R S Chaudhari, dialogues were written by Agha Jaan Kashmiri and Wajahat Mirza and the screenplay was done by the director K B Lal himself.

I am sure, many of us have gone through this experience in our lives. Some song heard sometime, somewhere haunts you so much that you can not simply forget it. In due course of time, this disappears, but at a later time, may be after many years when you hear that song again, all your memories come back and you are lost in Nostalgia.

Same thing has happened to me about today’s song, which is from an old film Raaz-1949. It is sung by Mohd. Rafi- who was just beginning to make a mark for him in Hindi film music. When I heard this song after almost 65-70 years, all old memories flashed before my eyes.

Today’s song is from an obscure film- Sansaar Naiya-1939. This film was made jointly by Paramount and liberty pictures, Bombay. Actually, both these film companies made only and mainly Action/Stunt and Costume films. Since this was a ‘Social’ film, may be they had to support each others as they were presumably not used to handling such ‘offbeat’ film, from what they were accustomed to produce !

Today’s song is from film ‘Bhedi Bangla’ (1949). This film was produced by Anand Subramanyam, under the banner of Jagriti films, owned by Master Bhagwan. The story, dialogues and songs were by Ehsaan Rizvi and music was by P Ramakant. This was a name used by C Ramchandra, because he was under contract with Filmistan and could not give music in his own name. It started with Raja Nene’s film Shadi Se Pehle’ in 1947, in which he first used his assistant’s name Paingankar (the joint MD was Karnad). His name was Ramakant Paingankar and was assisting Chitalkar for a long time. Later, for Bhagwan’s films like ‘Bhedi Bangla’, ‘Bhole Bhale’ (1949), ‘Babuji’ (1950), and ‘Bakshish’ (1950) also, Chitalkar used the pseudo name P Ramakant as MD (information from Marathi Chitrapat Sangeetkar Kosh by Madhu Potdar).

It is your words that tell of this predicament. Seasons come and go, as they have, year on year on year. . .  but the one who this heart wants to listen to again, has not returned after going away. . .

Rafi Sb has sung playback for a whole range of performers all the way from mid 1940s to early 1980s, and then some. He never declined to sing for any actor, be that a newcomer, a junior artist, or even non-entities who made just one song, one film appearances. On the other hand, the association of Rafi Sb’s voice with some very important and specific performers, has been well discussed and documented. Almost invariably, Rafi Sb was the singing voice for these artists, no matter what.

Missing Films of 1960s – 92
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

For today’s episode of this series, I present this sensuous song from the 1970 film ‘Veer Abhimanyu’.  As the name suggests, this is a mythological film, which based on the historical narrative from the epic Mahabharat. It covers the part of history of Abhimanyu, the son of Arjun. I give a brief summary below.

Abhimanyu is the son of Arjun and Subhadra. As Subhadra is the younger sister of Krishna and Balram, that makes Krishna and Balram uncles (mamma) of Abhimanyu. Being the son and nephew of the three best stalwarts of this epic, Abhimanyu is groomed to become one of the bravest and best warriors amongst the entire Kuru clan (i.e. both the Kaurav and Pandav lineages).

Yes, everyday. It seems there is a new song that you have sung for us, once again. Remembering you, everyday.

Well, if the film name is ‘Shola Jo Bhadke’, it would not be a coincidence that this film is by Bhagwan Dada. Today’s song in this series is from this 1961 film.
