In 1952, this voice came to the fore with the rousing proclamation of “Vande Maatram, Vande Maatram”. This song, which comes from the seminal creation of Bankim Chandra Chatterji – ‘Anand Matth’, was first published in 1882. After the passing of the first war of independence in 1857, the undercurrents of anger and resistance were simmering across the country. But the voices of cohesive and decisive action were still to come a couple of decades later. With the publication of ‘Anand Mathh’, the nation and its people got a slogan that said everything in just two simple words. After this song came on the lips of the common man, over the years many musical interpretations have been pronounced. Most of them are based in classical music, and the most popular versions are gradual and lingering, in the mode of a prayer to the motherland.

The mention of the name, takes me back again and again to my first meeting with Vijaylaxmi ji Deseram, and her introduction of Dr. Ashraf Aziz. Regulars will be familiar with Vijaylaxmi ji. Most avid listeners of Radio Ceylon and then Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation will immediately recognize this name, and will recall the soft and relaxing voice that has been the anchor of many mainline radio programs on Hindi film music and its creators. I have not yet met Dr. Aziz (who stays in Washington DC, USA), or even talked with him on the phone. But I am so familiar with his childhood and adolescent years, as also part of his later life. All on account of a wonderfully written article that captures a few key episodes and passages in great detail. The subject matter dealt within this article is beautifully summarized in its title – “Sajjaad Hussain Ki Khoj Mein”.
Remembering Sajjaad Hussain, the genius of musical magic, on his anniversary of birth (15th June.)

Four M’s and Prem Dhawan. That makes a list of songs that are the most often played, on the days of national significance – 15th August (Independence Day) and 26th January (Republic Day). The first M is Mohammed Rafi – “Ae Watan Ae Watan, Humko Teri Qasam”(‘Shaheed’, 1965). The second M is Mukesh –“Chodo Kal Ki Baaten” (‘Hum Hindustani’, 1960). The third M is Manna Dey – “Ae Mere Pyaare Watan” (‘Kabuliwaala’, 1961). And the fourth M is Mahendra Kapoor – “Mera Rang De Basanti Chola, Mera Rang De” (again from ‘Shaheed’, 1965). This, and so many more fabulous creations from the pen of this versatile multi-talented artists – it makes you wonder why his name is not listed in the same league as Sahir, Majrooh, Shailendra, Anand Bakshi etc.
Remembering Prem Dhawan on the anniversary of his birth. (13th June).
