I have been on a old movie watching spree recently. So far managed to see “Mere Mehboob” , “Deedar” and “Kaagaz ke Phool”. As it is, it is taking me 2-3 days to complete the film, because I do not like to miss a single scene or dialogue in the film. It has been a longtime wish to see “Kaaghaz ke Phool” which is finally fulfilled. Having seen “Pyaasa” I was somehow expecting a similar pathos laden fare. But this film is lot different as it is rather brighter with the spirit of ‘lights camera action’.

We have been discussing in this blog scores of songs from lesser known films which are gems but lost out soon after those films failed miserably at the box office. A few among those films even failed to get released. Surely, the producers and financiers of these films must have lost the money they invested. But in the event, the performances of other artists associated with such films went unnoticed. Music Director Vinod was one of such artists who despite the phenomenal success of the film ‘Ek Thhi Ladki’ (1949), could not sustain the success for long as most of his subsequent films did not fare well at the box office despite having melodious songs composed by him for those films. Those songs went out of circulation and faded as quickly as the respective films. Thanks to internet, we now have access to those gems to be shared with the lovers of old Hindi film songs.

Today (13 january 2013) is the 87th birth anniversary of Shakti Samanta (13 january 1926- 9 april 2009). Some of the most memorable Hindi movies in 1960s and 1970s were Shakti Films production. Movies like “Howrah Bridge” (1958), “China Town” (1961), “Kashmir Ki Kali” (1964), “An Evening in Paris” (1967), “Kati Patang” (1970), “Amar Prem” (1971) were Shakti Samanta’s movies.

For the Generations that became young in 50s, 60s or the 70s, Dev Anand was their Idol. The theatres showing his films used to be crowded with youngsters who tried to copy his style, mannerisms, Hair style etc.
