Here is a duet from “Sangam” picturised on Raj Kapoor and Vyjyanti Mala. The people involved in creating this song are the usual suspects, viz Shankar Jaikishan, Shailendra, Mukesh and Lata. This song is a party song, and this movie seemed to have quite a few party songs, I do not know why.

Here is a duet sung by Talat Mahmood and Lata. The typical quivering voice of Talat Mahmood on Sunil Dutt may sound a bit odd now, but this did not stop this song from becoming very popular. Lata sings for Asha Parekh, then a newcomer. This song is composed by Salil Chowdhary, and the lyricist Rajinder Krishan came up with very nice and hummable lyrics.

1950s and 1960s saw many historical movies ( mostly from Mughal period) being made. These movies have become part of Indian psyche. For instance, I have been told that ” bol meri taqdeer me kya hai” from “Hariyali aur raasta” is a wonderful song. I nodded my head knowledgeably at this suggestion by Raja though I doubted I had ever heard this song.

This movie “Manzil” was one of the unsuccessful movies of Amitabh Bachchan, but this one song from this movie, viz “Rimjhim gire saawan” has become the stuff of legends already. It is one of the first songs that comes to mind when one thinks of rain songs.

A very moving tale of an Afghani Pathan living in Calcutta, leaving his wife and young daughter behind in Afghanistan. This story was written by Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, and I had read it in my Hindi textbook during my school days.

It was the first time I read such a moving tale. I could fully empathise with the feelings of the Afghan towards the young Calcutta girl who reminds him of his daughter.
