The names of both Avinash Vyas and Bharat Vyas remind everyone of mythological movies and their bhajans and religious songs. On this death anniversary, I found a song, a Rafi solo with a difference. It is nothing like a bhajan or a mythological situation song, but appears to be roadside tamasha category song.
This is a fun song from the film Aadhi roti (1957). This movie has actors like Prem Adeeb, Master Bhagwan, Sulochana Latkar, Daisy Irani and Manorama. The songs are composed by Avinash Vyas and written by (unrelated) Bharat Vyas. As per the Rafi excel sheet, this song is performed on screen by Master Bhagwan. It figures as it does sound like a Bhagwan Dada song.
Three songs from the film are posted as below :

Actually the lullaby song “so ja re so jaa mere laal” is a multiple version song, with one more sad solo by GeetaDutt and a sad version by Rafi Sahab. I am glad that I visited the songs of this movie today. The sad version is something else and I don’t want to stop listening to it. Reminds me of another multiple version sad, lullaby song where Rafi Sahab scores a unbeaten ton in cricketing parlance: aaj kal mein dhal gaya. Composing a song, bringing it to the best possible shape and rehearsing it, till you get the perfect rendition with true expression must be as much hard work as it takes to complete a century in the test match. But then “Beti Bete” was in 1964, with Shankar-Jaikishan being so busy that they were canning more than one song in a day, as per some reports. So here Rafi Sahab and also other singers had to deliver the right take much quickly and had not much opportunity to be pedantic.
Excel sheet is also listing many Rafi songs composed by Avinash Vyas for Gujrati films. I would have attempted to post a gujrati song, especially the ‘Garba” songs like ‘mehnditevaavi’. But I hesitated, due to my half knowledge of the language. A Marathi song should be a safer bet to add in this series.
Avinash Vyas may not be one of the greats of the golden era of hindi film songs. This is a 1957 song, just about the right time when the composers had finally digested that a phenomena like Rafi Sahab exists. S. D.Burman was in his peak with films like “Pyaasa”, “paying Guest” etc., O. P. Nayyar was also getting into his groove and played a masterstroke with “Naya Daur”. Madan Mohan was still getting there with “Gateway of India”. But I feel strongly, that a couple of songs from this film “Aadhi Roti”, especially the lori song is a quality creation, deserves to hold its head high. This “lori” Rafi version has overshadowed the song I am posting here, as I heard it just now, after the present song and prepared the lyrics.
But I liked this song a lot too, for its peppy and mischievous spirit and Rafi sahab’s expertise and perfect delivery and timing in singing it. Another song, where it feels as if, more than one person is singing it, when actually only Rafi Sahab’s voice is there and no chorus to accompany. And plus also the fact that he seems to have so much time to sing not just the words, but accompany them with a lot of his typical ‘murkiyan’. All of this is done within the blink of an eye. Well, almost.
Any wonder that I wish, I was a butterfly on the wall, when all these recordings were happening in the recording studios.
This Rafi solo is presented, as a tribute to Avinash Vyas on his remembrance day.

Continuing with the ‘Blog Ten-Year Challenge’, we have two movies eligible for the challenge today (30th July 2020). In other words, songs of these two movies were represented on the blog ten years back on this day and these two movies have not been Yippeeee’ed on the blog. 😊

We had already enjoyed a lovely song from ‘Gunaahon Kaa Devtaa-1967’on 22.07.2020 under ‘blog ten-year challenge’ of that day. Today we are going to enjoy a song from the ‘1963’ movie ‘Mulzim’.
‘Mulzim-1963’ was directed by N.A. Ansari for ‘Bundelkhand Films, Bombay’. It had Pradeep Kumar, Shakila, N.A. Ansari, Johny Walker, Neelofar, Nasrin, Champak, Helen, Mumtaz Begam, Uma Dutt, Sagar, Ratan Gaurang, Bihari, Haroon, H. Shukla and others.
This movie had total seven songs in it written by Shakeel Badayuni. Music was composed by Ravi.

Today’s song is sung by Mohd Rafi and it is lip synced on screen by Johny Walker. Also seen in the picturization of the song are N.A. Ansari, Shakila, Pradeep Kumar, Ratan Gaurang and others.

We also pay our tributes to Johny Walker whose Remembrance Day was yesterday 29th July (11 November 1926 – 29 July 2003).

“Baabul Ki Galiyaan”(1972) was directed by Satya Dev Narang for Narang Films Combines, Bombay. This “social” movie had Hema Malini, Sanjay Khan, Sonia Sahni, Jagdeep, Shatrughan Sinha, David, Asit Sen, Manmohan Krishna, Bipin Gupta, Jayshree T, Savita, Brahmchaari, Kuljeet, Chandrima Bhaduri, Satyen Kappu, Tuntun, Hiralal, S N Bannerji, Bharm Bhardwaj, C S Dubey, Johny Whisky, Dilip Dutt, Birbal, Majnu, Abhimanyu Sharma, Pal Sharma, Tiwari, Ramesh Kumar etc in it.
The movie had five songs in it. One song (the most popular song from the movie) has already been covered in the past.
Here is the second song from the movie to appear in the blog. This song appears 3904 days after the first song appeared in the blog on 3 november 2008.
The song is sung by Asha Bhonsle. Rajinder Krishan is the lyricist. Music is composed by Ravi.
The song is picturised as a nagin dance song on Hema Malini. So Mushfiqur Rahim, the Bangladeshi wicketkeeper batsman has another Naagin dance song for his reference and necessary action. 🙂
The picturisation shows a snake charmer playing been and making a snake to sway (what people mistakenly believe to be snake dance), with Sanjay Khan looking on. This article touches upon “blog ten year challenge (2009-2019)” but this article is not part of that series. It is not possible to post an article in this series Today (16 march 2019), because movies of all the songs (all six of them) that were covered ten years ago (on 16 march 2009) have already been YIPPEED by now. 🙂
This blog ten year challenge (2009-2019) was started to serve some purpose, though we were not fully clear about them.
Let me try and enumerate them one by one.
Revisit movies that have not been revisited for years–

Songs and movies that we covered ten years ago and then forgot about those movies once again get our attention. Take “Sharaabi”(1984) for instance. It was as a result of this series that we realised that this movie, despite being introduced in the blog as far back as in 2009 had only three songs in the blog and that no songs from this movie were covered in the blog since 2012 !
The case of “Do Dishaayen”(1982) was specially remarkable. The movie had three songs in it. Two of these songs were covered on consecutive days on 2 and 3 february 2009 and then we forgot all about this movie. Thanks to this series, the third and final song from the movie got covered ten years after its debut in the blog and the movie got YIPPEED on 3 february 2019.
Likewise, movies like “Gomti Ke Kinaare”(1972) etc got fresh lease of life in the blog as a result of this series.
A fillip to YIPPEE project

As a result of this series, we found that a few movies whose songs got covered became YIPPEED as well. For instance, when we covered this song from “Sitaaron Se Aage”(1958), this had the added advantage of this movie getting YIPPEED as well.In other case, after we covered a song from a movie, we realised that the movie had one or two songs left and so that movie came under our radar for YIPPYdom.
Bringing back memories

For some regulars (especially those born in 1960s), this series brought back memories of the past.
A better appreciation of the past

The blog has evolved over a period of more than ten years. It has changed a lot. The way songs and movies were chosen in the past has undergone a change with time, though all these changes are mostly inadvertent and largely unplanned. Only some other observers can notice any patterns in the song posts of the blog one decade ago.
Mr Sadanand Kamath, our inhouse HFM researcher, who posted an article in the series carried out some indepth research on the way songs were covered ten years ago. He observed that
during July 19, 2008 to December 31, 2008, an overwhelming number of songs covered were of the films released in the 1960s and 70s with few songs from the 1950s and 1980s. However, the representation of songs from the films released in the 1930s and 40s were negligible. For instance, out of 475 songs covered during the period under reference, only 5 songs pertained to the films released in the 1940s – that too the late 1940s. Not a single songs of films released in the 1930s were covered during the period under reference.
These trends were, however, on the expected lines for two reasons. First, Atul ji, considering his age profile at the time of starting of the Blog, has virtually grown up in the midst of popular songs of the films of 1960s and 70s. Obviously, as a ‘start-up venture’ of his Blog, he would have been influenced by such songs. Secondly, and most importantly, even if he intended to cover the songs of the 1930s and 40s, I doubt whether these songs were available in good numbers on the video sharing platforms in 2008. Youtube was set up in 2005 as a video sharing platform. A random browsing of videos on YT gives me an impression that videos of Hindi film songs were uploaded in good numbers only from 2007 onward and the videos of old film songs (1930s and 40s) were getting uploaded mainly from 2009 onward.
The song under discussion is not a “ten year challenge” song, but this song appears here today as a result of this exercise. Another song from this movie “Raja Jani”(1972) was part of the “ten year challenge” post on 5 march 2019. That post triggered all kinds of nostalgic feelings among regulars. This movie “Raja Jani”(1972) had made its debut on the 22nd day of the blog on 9 august 2008 and it was the 22nd post in the blog. By the time the second post from this movie appeared on 5 april 2009, the blog was more than one thousand songs old. The third song from the movie came after a gap of 5800 songs in 4 november 2012. After that there was a big gap of over six years during which this movie was all but forgotten.
It was on 5 march 2019 that the fourth song from “Raja Jani”(1972) was covered as a part of “blog ten year challenge”. It was then that we realised that the movie was another two songs short of being YIPPEED.
One of these two missing songs has subsequently been covered in the blog.

Mr Pratap, senior to most of us had watched this movie when it was released. Here is what he has to say about this movie:
I saw the movie when it was released and remember that I enjoyed it mainly due to the songs.
As far as I recall, the story was a standard formula one, Hema Malini is a lost princess, raised by Nadira and earns her living through dances and acrobatics. Dharmendra is the lovable rogue who notices the similarity of Hema with the description of the lost princess in the posters/newspaper ads and thinks up a scheme of passing her off as the princess and get the promised reward. Durga Khote is the grandmother Rajmata who is literally dying for the lost girl. She gladly accepts Hema and soon announces her engagement to the evil Prime Minister Premnath’s still more evil son Prem Chopra. Hema is heartbroken when she learns that Darmendra was using her as a pawn to get the reward and she accepts. Not very original, so you know the rest of the story.
Here is the sixth and final song from “Raja Jani”(1972) to appear in the blog. The song is chronologically the first song of the movie. It is sung by Lata. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.
One can watch the picturisation and guess what is going on, in the light of the movie synopsis provided earlier.
In this blog, we first cover a song and then regulars post comment about that song. The song is “special” because this song has received comments about it even before it has been posted. These comments were posted in the penultimate song post of course. For instance, Peevesie’s mom commented that

I used to substitute shanno with my name. 😉

Hullo Atuldom
The song with this post is a Peevesie discovery. I don’t remember when exactly, but definitely a few years back she mentioned about this song to me. And it looks like she has seen and enjoyed the video too and it has stayed in her memory. She remembered exactly how the song starts. And the dance steps of Govinda and Madhuri. Awesome combination. Just like in the previous Madhuri Dixit song where with Prabhu Deva as her co-dancer, here too, she is excellent. She is in a different orbit when she has a dancer for a co-actor. In “Que serasera” she matched Prabhu Deva step for step, here it is a typically Govinda dance that is a treat.
So what, if the lyrics are non-sensical. The song is set as a fun-song, going by the video I have a feeling that Madhuri has accidentally eaten or drunk something intoxicating and Govinda is trying his best to control her in the given circumstances.
A few days back I had sent a song from ‘Disco Dancer’ to Atulji and then I had made up my mind to follow it with another Mithun song which features a ‘mithai‘. There were other songs from the 70s which were running through my mind for this particular post which is for a very special occasion. Songs which showed the male running the household while the female is away at work. But on reviewing those songs I felt that the song which Peevesie suggested is better. Why? Well for one today is a party occasion and “mithai toh banti hai” – it is our Ranchiwaale Gaanewala’s birthday (now its about time to give him a new name, he is no longer in Ranchi 🙂 ). It has a lot of activity in it and our sutradhaar is a hyperactive person. I don’t need to give any proof to show his level of activeness, his commitment to his pets, work and the blog is proof enough. There have been days when I have found him online early in the morning with a post at 5:45 a.m. and a few times his last post has been at 12 in the night. Hats off to his dedication. Approximately 10804 posts (on the day this is being written) and still having a lot of ideas to connect with songs and give us new post daily – AMAZING. Thank you Atulji for giving us this group and site to turn to.
Before I sat to write all this, I read through what I had written last year and I feel the same even now- May God give Atulji health, peace of mind, lots of time and good infrastructural support in the form of unending internet and electrical connections. And we will not mind him being absent from the blog when his family is around as they are more entitled to his time. (Hope he enjoyed his first vacation, this year, after he started the blog) And hope he doesn’t mind us pestering him with our farmaishes. Here is hoping he gives us many opportunities to celebrate and we will keep presenting him with lovely songs.
Coming to today’s song it is from the 1990 release “Izzatdaar” which starred the stalwart Dilip Kumar in the lead with the south Indian actor Raghuvaran as villain. Another southern star- Swapna- played Dilip Kumar’s daughter, Madhuri played his grand daughter and Govinda plays a man who works for the underworld (I think) but gets reformed on falling in love. (the powers of the feeling of love 🙂 ). It was a revenge story with Dilip Kumar avenging his daughter’s death etc. with lot of Bollywood masala. It was directed by K Bapaiah, Anand Bakshi wrote songs which were composed by Laxmikant Pyaarelal. Amit Kumar and Alka Yagnik are the playback.

The movie had Biswajeet, Mumtaz, Kanan Kaushal, Sujeet Kumar, Padma, Manmohan, Sulochana, Manmohan Krishna, Brahmchaari, Shabnam, Lata Bose, Keshav Rana, Jayshree T, Geetanjali, Bhagwan Sinha, Jankidas, Har Shukla, Anand Joshi, Jugal Kishore, Dinanath, Shah, Abu Bakar, Manohar, Nishaat, Jeevan etc in it.

What a hidden gem of a song it is ! It is a synchronised dance song picturised on Mumtaz and Padma Khanna. The picturisation shows people gathered around the dancers who sing and dance while we have Manmohan Krishna playing “Been” and a gentleman (whom I am unable to identify) playing guitar.
This song can be described as a snake dance song, a dance form which has become quite popular nowadays thanks to Bangladeshi cricketers. 🙂 The snake dance steps of theb Bangladeshi cricketers were taken from the “Nagina”(1986) song Main teri dushman dushman tu meri main naagan to sapera. This dance step has been mass copied by Sri Lankan cricket watching public as well as famous people (like Sunil Gavaskar, for instance) by now. So the “novelty” value of that snake dance step has been lost. Have no worry. Here is another snake dance song, one that is performed by Mumtaz and Padma Khanna. Being a synchronised dance song, it is a fit snake dance song for a pair of Bangladeshi batsmen batting together at the crease. They can dance like Mumtaz and Padma Khanna whenever they feel that that are on the verge of winning a match. 🙂 And do not forget to give credit to me for this wonderful snake dance song. 🙂

The yippeee film for today the 1972 production by Manoj Kumar – ‘Shor’.
There was a period in the career of Manoj Kumar, where every film he touched has either been a hit, or it has commanded a cult status over the years. Starting with ‘Shaheed’ in 1965, and right up to ‘Kranti’ in 1981, he produced, directed and acted in a string of hit films, that have become memorable icons over the years. It was ‘Shaheed’ in 1965, then ‘Upkar’ in 1967, then ‘Poorab Aur Pashchim’ and ‘Yaadgar’ in 1970, then ‘Shor’ in 1972, ‘Roti Kapda Aur Makan’ in 1974, and then ‘Kranti’ in 1981. Of these, the 1972 production of ‘Shor’ is kind of the odd one out – it is not really a patriotic / nationalist theme, that is Manoj Kumar’s forte, that earned him the nickname of Mr Bhaarat. After 1981, Manoj Kumar seemed to have lost his touch, and after a string of indifferent productions – ‘Painter Babu’ (1983), ‘Kalyug Aur Ramayan’ (1987), and ‘Clerk’ (1989), he kind of let go the production / direction stance.
Coming back to ‘Shor’, not just that it was a little different from the normal ‘nationalist’ genre of Manoj Kumar, it is also counted as the least successful film, commercially, in his career as a producer / director – from the period of ‘Shaheed’ to ‘Kranti’. And then, like a few other handful of examples, this film gained a cult status over the decades. And that was, not in the least due to the fantastic songs and music of this film.
Having said that, it surely needs to be recognized and acknowledged that – looking at the list of his films from ‘Shaheed’ to ‘Kranti’ – he belongs to that select band of producers/directors that have had a Midas touch as far as music and songs are concerned. A quick review of his films listed above will lend credence to this statement. Even if, for the sake of argument only, if this set of films is viewed for quality features and box office attractions, then even if one wants to discount other aspects related to the film, one will not be able to discount these films for the sake of the music and songs.
One reason that ‘Shor’, after its initial lukewarm reception at the box office, continued to build into a cult film status, is its wonderful, and even powerful, music and songs. Let’s take look at the list of songs of this film. It seems to be short in the list, but the impact and profundity of these songs, stands out all by itself.

My favorite amongst these is of course the one that talks about the colors of water – “Paani Re Paani Tera Rang Kaisa”. The words of this song are just so dear. Every line, every stanza has its own flavor, and impact. In the three stanzas, the question posed in the mukhda is answered in different ways. And the last one – which will touch a chord of the life’s hope within each human being – is simply the best – “Sau Saal Jeene Ki Ummeedon Jaisa”.
Then we have the supremely inspirational song of hope and progress – “Jeevan Chalne Ka Naam” – a song that plays through the days of the hopeful endaeavor, as the hero attempts to break a record of continuous cycling effort. An event and a song that bring together an entire community – a pinnacle of synthesis of emotions coming together as one.
And then the song that has, along with “Paani Re Paani. . .”, garnered the cult status – this time in the genre of love songs. Every time I listen to this line – “Zindagi Aur Kuchh Bhi Nahin, Teri Meri Kahaani Hai”, it sends shiver down my spine. The sheer simplicity of words, put together to express one of the most profound essays in the multiplicity of human existence. In eventual analysis, actually in this life, there is nothing more than the self. And practically every tale is eventually a tale of the self. But love changes all that. When there is love, then the tale is of ‘you and me’ put together – and there really is nothing else in life actually. “Ik Pyaar Ka Naghma Hai” – life is but simply a song of love, yours and my love. One of THE best expressions that puts in a definitive and ultimate response to the query of “what is love”.
Another aspect of his musical expression I would like to discuss. What we see here is the shades of Raj Kapoor and Goldie Anand – as far as the construction and the presentation of the song is concerned. Manoj Kumar really has that Midas touch to get the best out of the team of songwriter + music director + singers. The songs of his films are some of the best-in-class creations that will be listed right up there with the ones that are considered as top creations, as well as presentations. He also has a knack of putting together the most appropriate scenario, and most convincingly, to bring the song in and merge it quite so seamlessly with the flow of the story line. His song presentations are simply out of the ordinary, in a special category all by themselves. Take your thoughts back to the songs like “Jogi Hum to Lut Gaye Tere Pyaar Mein” from ‘Shaheed’; “Aayee Jhoom Ke Basant” from ‘Upkar’; “Main Na Bhoolunga. . .” from ‘Roti Kapda Aur Makaan’; “Ab Ke Baras Tujhe. . .” and “Zindagi Ki Na Toote Ladi” from ‘Kranti’. And the one that is the closest to my heart as a special favorite – “Hai Preet Jahaan Ki Reet Sada” from ‘Purab Aur Paschim”. That I am picking these songs as a sampler does not mean that the remaining songs do not jell. Each one does. Just that the space does not permit me to write about each one of them, what all I wish to write.
The song presented today, comes on to the screen with an already prefaced history, in the film. The three stanzas in this song are directed towards three men who are coincidentally present and watching the dance performance, Rani (role played by Jaya Bhaduri), is a worldly wise young lady, and a street urchin at that. To compete with and to secure herself in this most perilous environment in which she exists, she has to become one of them, with a tongue that can abuse an curse the most evil, and hands that are adept in swinging the blade of a deadly knife. Her standard masquerade to cheat people, i.e. men, and rob them, is to appear on a less traversed road in the late evening, and pose as a helpless damsel looking for help. And when a victim gets interested, she will start screaming to draw the attention of whatever is the sparse crowd, crying for help against the man. The poor victim, is painted as a trying to outrage her modesty. She blackmails them to cough up some money, in exchange for her to keep quiet.
Prior to this song, these three men are each party to such encounters with her. The first one – a regular junior artist whose name I am not able to recall right away, is a meek fellow who gets conned by Rani. The second one is Shankar (role played by Manoj Kumar), who turns the tables on her, and dares her to shout and gather attention. And the third one is also local street smart mawaali (role played by Manmohan), who fancies Rani to be easy meat for his spurious intentions. For a change, as Rani does a street dance performance, striving also to make some honest money, the three gentlemen appear one by one, to be dealt with appropriately.
Jaya’s performance as Rani is just superb. In 1972, she is very fresh from IFTI, Pune, and her portrayal of a near vagabond and street smart character is quite so convincing. We also see Premnath as the Pathan friend of Shankar, Master Satyajeet as Deepak, the mute son of Shankar, and Manmohan as the local mawaali. Once again, I request help from the more knowledgeable readers to help identify the very familiar junior artist behind the bespectacled thin old man who appears in the first stanza.
