“What a find. Such a rollicking song.”

This the comment by our own Ava Suri ji, that I find on the YouTube upload page of this song. Yes, ‘rollicking’ is just the right word to describe the tenor of this song. By the way, the YouTube channel on which this is posted is titled ‘The Edwina Channel’. And for those who are familiar, this channel is managed by Dan Thomas (aka Thomas Daniel). Dan has been actively collaborating with dear Greta Memsaab, for cleaning and sprucing up digital videos of old Hindi films, subtitling them and putting them up on the YT. Our dear Raja ji is also part of this effort.

Mukesh and his co-singers – 4
————————————————

A song recorded and composed by Roshan in 1950, was the topic of discussion on a TV program nearly 5 decades later. The singer (judge on the show) was requested by none other than Anil Biswas, to sing a few lines of the famous song. The specific reference was to the word “ib” in the song “Sun Bairi Balam Sach Bol Re Ib Kyaa Hoga” from ‘Bawre Nain’ (1950). She rendered the song in an effortless manner without any background music. It is difficult to believe that she could sing so well at the spur of the moment.

Mukesh and his Composers – 14
——————————————–

As we celebrate seven decades of freedom, patriotic songs continue to eulogize the glories of our nation. These songs have always had a special place in the hearts of all Indians. During the good old days of DD, many such songs were played throughout the day on such occasions. One of the very common songs that was invariably played was the Mukesh number “Chhodo Kal Ki Baaten” from the film ‘Hum Hindustani’ (1960). Coming from the baton of Usha Khanna in her second film as a composer, the song was sung with much gusto by Mukesh. The other famous song by Mukesh in this genre is obviously the title song from ‘Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai’ (1960).

Atul ji’s 10K Song Milestone Celebrations – 8

Mukesh and His Co-Singers – 3
—————————————-

The thought had crossed my mind a few months back. To calculate the sum of all the posts of contributors and subtract it from the grand total which would have given the obvious number. A number big enough to just admire, thank and congratulate with high gratitude. Thankfully, the pen and paper (and well a calculator) did not meet and so we had Sudhir ji planning his modus-operandi.

Else who knows, I would have written a common mail to both which I usually do and spoiled all the fun.

I got to know of Sudhir ji’s plans which he told me in person when I met him for a short visit to his house. Now wait. Isn’t our meeting a celebration to write a post? Yes indeed, but that shall wait for another day.

“हम तो पहली ही नज़र में दे चुके हैं दिल तुम्हें

Lingering memories, fading in, successively, in a shuffle sequence, as the charmed mind tries to follow and decipher all the fine nuances and entertaining devices, contained in this immortal, unforgettable voice – that of Rafi Sb.

“सावन की परी चुप चुप है खड़ी

I came across this song for the first time, few weeks ago. It has been sitting in the hard disk for quite some time now, one of a set of songs of Rafi Sb that Bakshish Singh ji gave to me. On some prompting thought in the mind, I just played this song, as I was searching for a song starting with ‘स’, and goodness, just could not believe that this wonderful gem of a song has been sitting away from mainstream listening. Later, when I checked online, this song is posted on YT more than once, implying it is not so rare as I would imagine. Oh but, what a song, what a song.

“शम्मा बुझने को चली

Of the many colors of Rafi Sb’s voice, probably the most touching, and the most impressive is his interpretation of the emotions of sadness. Maybe, it be so that the “. . . sweetest songs are the ones that tell of the saddest thoughts” (from the poetry of Percy Shelley, that inspired the iconic song of ‘Patita’ (1953) – “Hain Sab Se Madhur Wo Geet Jinhen Hum Dard Ke Sur Mein Gaate Hain”). And maybe, that the genuineness and honesty of expressions that go together with the unfeigned and substantive voice of Rafi Sb, it simply makes us feel the true depth of this ‘sweetness’ – a sweetness that touches a very familiar, a very dear chord within.

“वो चाँद सा चेहरा लिए, छत पर तेरा आना

tu raat khadi thi chhat pe
nee main samjha ke chaand nikla

There is something so uniquely desi about this romantic element – ‘chhat pe’ – ‘on the rooftop’ scenario. If it were the western milieu, the thought would be to go as far as the balcony; the scenario being Juliet present at the balcony and Romeo serenading her from the garden below. No where the western writer has thought of ascending to the terrace, bring in the soubriquet of the moon, and then let the verse take over from there. On the subcontinent, so much romance seems to have happened on the terrace, in the pages of prose and in the lines of verse.

OK, back again, even a longer absence this time. About these gaps, the less I say is better, because everything sounds like an old story. So I will let it be. 🙂

Coming the next installment in this series of Rafi Sb songs.  Today, I present a solo by Rafi Sb, from the 1960 film ‘Naache Nagin Baaje Been’.

“रहोगे कब तक हमसे दूर

ishq pukaarega tumko aana hi hoga re
aana hi hoga re
aana hi hoga re

Goodness, more than four months now that the previous episode in this series was posted (29th Sep, 2016). Not a record, I must say. There are some other series (by me) (sic) in progress that have been waiting much much longer to be completed. But then, this scenario makes me marvel more and more on how Atul ji is able to pull the progression of this bandwagon, single handedly, day after day after day. I have been excusing myself on account of too much time pressure on my personal side of life. And  then I think, well, my situation is not very unique, and I am sure that there are similar constraints that are present in the lives of everyone else. And thus, I tip my hat to Atul ji, for his tenacity and perseverance. On his shoulders, the bandwagon rolls on and on. . .
