Today’s song is one of the very few songs sung by the Music Director Anil Biswas. Today’s film is Bhookh-1947.

In olden days, there were 3 major film centres-Bombay, Lahore and Calcutta. After 1947, all the Hindi film activity at Lahore shifted to Bombay. By mid 50’s even Calcutta almost stopped making Hindi films. Many Hindi speaking artistes in various disciplines of film making shifted to Bombay and finally Bombay became the only and the main Hindi film making Centre.

Today’s song is from a social film the early era -Janmabhoomi-1936.

This was sort of a hidden or disguised Patriotic film. In those days films were scrutinised minutely by the British Government to eliminate any scene, dialogue or a song, which they suspected was a criticism of the Government. This was to ensure that there should not be any room to create or spread criticism of the Government or to promote patriotism leading to a revolt.

The police became stricter during the war period and it became the reasonKavi pradeep had to go underground for a few months for writing a daring songforthe film ” Kismet”-1943. The song was ” Door hato aye duniya walo (move away, O outsiders)”, which invited the ire of the then Government.

The first Talkie film came in 1931. The first year had just 24 films, but within a span of 3 years, the Talkie films crossed the century mark, with 121 films in 1934, 152 in 1935 and 134 in 1936. Making a film was a complicated process which needed a studio, the latest machinery and a lot of money. This was difficult for a single person and thus the Studio System got established. The studios ruled the industry and the film making. Films were sold on the names of the studios and the actors had secondary appeal to the audience.

Ramesh Behl, who directed this movie, was also the producer of this movie. The cast of this movie included Jeetendra, Rekha, Karan Shah, and Mandakini, with Satish Shah, Atlee Brar, Dan Dhanoa, Sushma Seth, Bina, Babli, Anjana, Ghanshyam, Chandu, Pandurang Boloor, Lata, Sheela, Leena, Mina, Tina, Rupa, Omi Chopra, Surendra, Rahi, Vasu, Iqbal, Rakesh, Reshma Aurora, Anthony, Prakash, and Kader Khan. There are some people, who are in our lives, not related to us by blood, but are a very important part of our daily lives. Whom we meet every day, they come and wish us in the morning, they serve us, do a job for us to make our life easier. Yet some form an affinity, a well-wishing, non-interfering, loyal, non-judgmental, they are a friend of the family. Your children, your neighbor’s family, your acquaintances, your relatives, family members in far off and nearby places, your colleagues, your business associates, or whomever you come in regular contact with, associate that person as your so and so.

A R Rahman – The Musician of 21st Century – 7

The revival of the series on A. R. Rehman is beginning with this post. The last post in the series was this song.

I apologise for my tardiness in leaving the series like this for 2.5 years. None but myself to be blamed for not taking the targets/tasks seriously. Maybe that is the reason none of my series appear in the list of series posted in the blog.

Koyi nai, I plough on doggedly. Not that it is a hard task to find ARR gems, sometimes forgotten in decades old fog. Take the songs of “Saathiya” for instance.
