“Ham Ek Hain” (1946) as the name suggests, was a movie on the theme of national unity. Durga Khote, in addition to her own biological son, also adopts two more boys and a girl of different religions and communities and brings them up as her own children, while letting them follow their respective religions. And all these children fall in love with persons of the relevant religious faiths and marry them with full parental approval. A very progressive movie indeed.:) Now we know the source of inspiration for Manmohan Desai’s “Amar Akbar Anthony”. 🙂

It was many years ago; as a child I saw the song “Dil Jalta Ha To Jalne De”(‘Pehli Nazar’, 1945) as one of the songs in a Chitrahaar program on Doordarshan. At that time, I had no idea about the actors present on the screen during this song. The image of Motilal that I would later remember and carry with me for a long time, would be the balding, and somewhat comical man from films like ‘Mr. Sampat’ (1952) and ‘Jaagte Raho’ (1956). And it was much later that I would become aware that the young man in this song, with a moustache and a head of full hair is none other than the same Motilal. However, on the first viewing of this song on TV, it was the charming face of the lady love, that enamored me, and the image of that open expression on her face, with expectation and waiting written on it, still remains with me as one the most endearing images of a lady actor on screen.

Shamim (also known as Shamim Bano and Shamim Kamal Pasha) was one of the female actors who was active in the 40s as a heroine/side heroine. She was the niece of Khursheed Bano, one of the top singer-actor of the 40s. I was not aware of Shamim until I found her name mentioned in Kidar Sharma’s autobiography ‘The One and Lonely Kidar Sharma’. There is a trivia mentioned in this book about selecting Shamim as the heroine of the film ‘Armaan’ (1942). Kidar Sharma insisted that Motilal and Shamim would be his hero and heroine for the film. Chandulal Shah, the owner of Ranjit Movietone said “ if you take Shamim, Khursheed will never work with you in any films as she is very jealous of her young and charming niece”.

In my school days, I had read about many heroic events of Indian history like Maharana Pratap viz. Emperor Akbar, Shivaji vs Aurangzeb, Rani Laxmibai vs. British East India Company etc. All the opponents were villains to me and I hated them for their wrong doings.
