Today’s song is from a Historical film – Andolan-1951.

The film was produced by Harnam Motwane, for his own banner Motwane Ltd. Bombay. It was directed by Phani Mujumdar and the music was by Pannalal Ghosh.

The film had in its cast Kishore Kumar, Shivraj, Krishnakant, Sachinn Shankar- Dancer, Parshuram, Tiwari, manju, Pushpa and many others. There were 3 lyricists and 8 singers for only 5 songs of the film.

film Andolan-1951 was a less known serious film. It is likely that most people have not even heard its name. I have not seen this film. But this is what its film booklet says-“In the year 1885, Charu Dutt, a worldly-wise patriot, journeys from his little village to attend the first session of the Indian National Congress, held in Bombay. A fire with patriotic zeal, he returns to his village and speaks to his friends and relatives of the new wave that is about to spread over India. To his son he explains the cultural and political past of India, from the dawn of her history upto the turbulence of 1857. . The years roll on, and we come to the partition of Bengal. There is thunder in the air, and India’s inspiring song, “Bande Mataram”, is born. . The struggle gathers strength. Mahatma Gandhi appears, and freedom comes closer…..1920….1921….. Simon Commission, Bardoli, Dandi, 1930….1932….the battle rages and the drams heightens, and thus, August 1942, Quit India, and on to the final chapter in our freedom story, which unfolds in this film as the story of a single family, representing the nation of which they are the heart-beats. ”

Today’s song is from a Mythological film Ayodhyapati-1956.

The Producer was A.A.Nadiyadwala, the Director was S. Fattelal and the Music Director was Ravi – an assistant to Hemant Kumar for a long time. Ravi had just become an independent Music Director for the film Vachan-1955. However, he still continued for a few more years as Hemant Kumar’s assistant. It was a rare case of Ravi giving music to a Mythological film, if you look at his later years’ performance. But, being a new independent MD, I guess, he accepted whichever film he got.

The cast of the film included Usha Kiran, Abhi Bhattacharya, Achala Sachdeva, Manorama, Rajkumar Khatri, Ratnamala, Anant Kumar, Balraj Mehta, Rajan Haksar, Dar Kashmiri (elder brother of actor Jeevan), Baby Asha Parekh and many others.

Today’s song is from a Religious film- Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu-1953.

Consequent to the grand success of the film BAIJU BAWRA-1952, the Prakash Pictures of the Bhatt brothers came out of its financial crisis, making a handsome profit and regaining its fame. For their next film, they repeated the Hero of Baiju Bawra – Bharat Bhushan and resorted again to their comfort zone of Religious/Mythological film Genre.

For a change, this time they opted for a story on a Saint from Eastern India. They hoped, perhaps, to recapture the Hindi film market in the Eastern Territory, which had suffered due to the closed outflow of Hindi films from New Theatres, Calcutta, which was on the verge of closing down totally. To attract the East India audience, they even hired R.C.Boral- one of the major supporters of New Theatres from its beginning- as the Music Director of this film.

Today’s song is from a Mythological film Hanuman Pataal Vijay-1951.

The film was made by Basant Pictures of Homi Wadia, who was the Producer and the Director of this film. It is very strange that a person who separated from his own brother on the issue of making stunt/action films- which he advocated- resorted to making social and Mythological films and his brother, who advocated making films other than stunt/action films, continued to make stunt films ! One wonders why at all they separated then !

The film had music by the Wadia favourite – S.N.Tripathi, who also expertly acted as Hanuman in such films. The cast of the film included Meena Kumari, Mahipal, Niranjan Sharma (a fixed actor as Ravan in every Wadia film), S.N.Tripathi, Dalpat, H. Prakash, Amarnath, Rajni (daughter of Bhudo Advani’s brother) and many others. The 4 Lyricists of the film wrote 8 songs.
