Here is yet another song of the “how come this song was not discussed earlier” genre. This evergreen song from “Sangam” (1964) added a new term to the Hindi lexicon, viz “Buddha Mil Gaya” to indicate mismatched pairings where the boy is many years senior to the girl. Such pairings were not unusual till a few decades back. This phrase was used in the title of a 1971 movie as well. And if I remember correctly, one song (either this song or another song from “Buddha Mil Gaya” (1971)) found itself in troubles with Indian censors. I have forgotten which song it was and I request our knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this matter.

“Deewaana” (1967) was aa Anupam Chitra Production movie. It was directed by Mahesh Kaul. The movie had Raj Kapoor, Saira Bano, Lalita Pawar, Tiwari, Salim, Kanhaiyalal, Kamal Kapoor, Ullhas, Ravindra Kapoor, Hiralal, Leela Misra, Jankidas etc in it.

A few days ago the blog completed 6500 songs and also 1600 songs of Rafi Sahab. Moreover Lata Mangeshkar also has achieved 1900 songs in the blog. So the two of them have featured in more than 3000 or almost 3500 songs in the blog. The difference being the Rafi-Lata duets and some more songs like group songs where they both are singing alongwith others.

Today (23 august) is the birthday of Saira Bano. Saira Bano made her debut in 1960s and when one thinks about it, her career was mainly confined to the decade of 1960s, with a few sporadic appearances in 1970s.

I came across this beautiful unknown song just today. It is from the movie Sautela Bhai starring Guru Dutt and Raaj Kumar. The beautiful song is set to music by Anil Biswas and the peppy lyrics are by Shailendra. There is almost a mathematical precision to the way the song is arranged, the singers and the chorus sing in a set pattern, after listening to one paragraph you know exactly who is going to sing the refrain, and when the chorus is going to repeat lines. Such patterns are usual in good poetry, and it enhances the rhythm of this song too. A special word for fantastic singing by Manna Dey and Meena Kapoor. Meena’s voice sounds so rich and full, like Geeta Dutt’s. She complements Manna Dey’s amazing voice perfectly.

“Bandini” (1963) was a movie based on pre independence days when Indian was still under British occupation. “Bandini” (1963) is the story of Nutan who is serving jail sentence in a jail. The jail also has a freedom fighter who is to be hanged. This song is sung by the freedom fighter as he is being led to the gallows.
