This article is written by Peevesie’s mom, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

A few days back on the occasion of Amitabh and Rekha’s birthday I spoke of how famous or popular or well received their pairing was in Bollywood movies. There were other such equally popular jodis. Viz. Rishi Kapoor- Neetu Singh, Vinod Mehra- Moushmi Chaterjee, Rajesh Khanna with Sharmila Tagore, Rajesh Khanna with Mumtaz, Rajesh Khanna with Asha Parekh etc in my growing up years. Actually I thought that Jaya Bhaduri never made a geat pair on screen with Amitabh, I liked her more with Sanjeev Kumar or even Jeetendra. There were popular pairing in the previous generation of stars too. But I think we have more knowledgeable people in our group to list them. Now what made a pairing popular was how well they looked together or how had their movie fared at the box office or how much recall value their songs had.

Today (6 november) is the 27th death anniversary of Sanjeev Kumar. When most of his contemporary actors were content to get typedcast in certain kinds of roles and would spend their entire career playing the same kinds of role, Sanjeev Kumar would play just about any kind of character that he was offered. While signing up movies, he did not worry about the impact of that role on his star value. To worry about one’s stardom was for lesser actors, not for Sanjeev Kumar , who could play roles that most heroes would summarily reject. Sanjeev Kumar played roles of deaf and dumb (Koshish), pimp (Manoranjan), Old man (in several movies), mad (Khilona) etc. His star value remained undiminished, no matter what kind of roles he played in his movies.

“Ghar” (1978) was based on a sensational news published in 1970s which made headlines all over India and even the PM of the country took note of it. “Aakraman” (1975) was a title that came as a surprise to me. Those were the days when Hindi movies did not have titles in Textbook Hindi. “Aakraman” is Hindi/ Sanskrit for “Attack”. The tendency for movie makers those days was the use a word like “Hamla” instead of “Aakraman”, even though it was a word of normal usage in Hindi textbooks. That way one needs to give some credit to the makers of this movie that he used a Hindi title for a Hindi movie.
