Another wonderful song, actually a qawwaali, that I discovered recently to be composed by Usha Khanna. The singer of this qawwaali is Jaani Baabu Qawwaal. When I had heard this qawwaali many year ago, and associating the name of Jaani Baabu with it, I had presumed this to be non-film offering, since Jaani Baabu is a professional mainstream qawwaali singer. Only recently, as I was selecting songs composed by Usha Khanna, for posting on this blog, I came across once again this wonderful qawwaali on YouTube, and then realized that it is actually from the film Do Khilaadi (1976).

“Saajan Ki Saheli” (1980) is a movie which came up in the last stage of the Golden era of Hindi movie music. Those were the days when Disco music was becoming the rage and lyrics were losing their importance in such songs. During those days, we fortunately still had the kind of music in some movies that we had grown up to love all these decades. These were off beat movies, smaller budget movies, family values movies- in brief “non mainstream movies”.

“Ummeed” (1971) is an obscure movie, despite this movie being of relatively recent vintage by the standards of this blog. This movie was a Rajan Films production and it was directed by Nitin Bose. The cast of this movie included names like Ashok Kumar, Nanda,Leela Naidu, Joy Mukherjee, Tuntun, Agha, Leela Misra etc. This movie must have sunk without a trace, because I have not heard of this movie despite this movie getting released when I was at my most alert and curious as a pre teen kid.

And that is what I am trying to do just now. I have realised late that today is Karwa chauth festival, and so at this late hour, I am trying to push through some karwa chauth festival songs. 🙂

Today happens to be the 24th death anniversary of one of the absolute geniuses that our Hindi film industry has ever produced. He was a colossus, especially as a singer, and there is certainly no way that this blog would let such an occasion, sad though a death anniversary always is, to go unnoticed.

“Baaton Baaton Mein” (1979) is a movie that was not about superhuman characters, but about average day to day characters like you and me. And the depiction of their hopes, aspirations, joys, sorrows and other feelings of the characters were so natural and one could empathise with them. And when these feelings are expressed in the form of songs which are written with heart, composed with sensitivity and sung with feeling, that such songs are bound to be remembered and recalled.
