During 1970s, when I would try to tune radio Ceylon on wednesday night between 8 PM to 9 PM, tuning to the desired station was not as easy as it is for TV stations. There were so many radio stations on the same 25 metre band and getting a clear reception of Radio Ceylon, while avoiding voices of Voice of America, BBC etc was quite an art.

Bollywood movies of 1970s typically had a “disguise” song where the hero or heroine would enter the heavy security villain’s den in disguise. Their disguise would always be as the lead dancer (s) of the music troupe that was supposed to entertain the guests of the villain.

“Gora Aur Kala” was almost a swan song for Rajendra Kumar as a hero, who was pitted against a newcomer viz Hema Malini in this movie. An ageing Rajendra Kumar against a young Hema Malini- such mismatches were not quite unknown in Bollywood those days.

“Manoranjan” was a movie based on “Irma la douce”. Shammi Kapoor, the brain behind this movie, did not realise that the topic of this movie was far too alien for desi taste, and moreover, India audiences had yet to mature to appreciate any kind of music that was even slightly off the mainstream.
