I have so far discussed 54 out of around 100 songs that Sajjad Hussain composed for Hindi movies. The remaining songs are highly elusive and I am always on the lookout for them.

“Garm Hawaa” (1973) was a critically acclaimed movie of its time on a sensitive matter (lives and travails of Indian Muslims). It had Geeta Sidharth, Balraj Sahni, Jalal Agha, Farooq Sheikh etc in lead roles.

Hai tere saath meri wafaa

Most people will agree that one Priya Rajwansh is more than enough for one movie. But Chetan Anand obviously did not think so. In “Hindustan Ki Kasam” (1973), she plays double role. In this movie, she plays two sisters separated at childhood (what an original idea ! 🙂 ). One girl ends up in India and grows up with Indian parents, whereas the other girl ends up in Pakistan and grows up with Pakistani parents.

Har taraf ab yahi afsaane hain

I listened to this song for several years without being aware of its details. It is only for the last few years that have found out the details of this song. This song , which is sung by Manna Dey, is from “Hindustan Ki Kasam” (1973). Raj Kumar playing an India Air Force pilot, is the hero of this movie. In this movie, Priya Rajwansh plays the romantic interest of Raj Kapoor.

We often read about real life following reel life and vice versa. I am not talking about movie actors playing roles based on some other real life people. “Hanste Zakhm” (1973) was, not surprisingly (in hindsight) , a commercial disaster. Chetan Anand, the maker of this movie, was so enamoured of Priya Rajwansh that she was the heroine of all his movies, despite her wooden face. No doubt she tried hard, as did others, to perform to the best of their abilities, but this movie had other weak points viz confused storyline, etc.

I have already discussed as many as three songs from “Hanste Zakhm” (1973). But this movie has more nice songs in it, of course. The request for this song was a long pending one.

Deep deewaali ke jhhoothhe

Though I have seen the movie “Jugnu” (1973), I do not much remember the songs of this movie. While looking for deewali songs, I found that this movie indeed has a deewali song, and that too a happy deewali song. I wonder how I do not remember this song despite watching this movie.

Songs play a very important role in the overall experience of a movie goer. Normally it takes a while before the first song kicks in. But there are occasions when the movie begins with a song. Credits are rolling in and a song is playing in the background. As the credit ends, so does the song, and the story begins in the right earnest.

I have often tried to compile a list of male and female actors who acted together in movies before they married each other. One can think of names like Dev Anand- Kalpana Kartik, Shammi Kapoor- Geeta Bali, Randhir Kapoor-Babita, Rishi Kapoor-Neetu Singh, Amitabh Bachchan-Jaya Bhaduri, Dharmendra-Hema Malini etc.
