I had not heard of a film named ‘Chatran’ (1988) until recently. The title of the film was unusual. I was wondering as to why the film in which Gulzar and R D Burman were associated, has remained obscure. After a search on the Google, I got the answer.

Last weekend, during my forced medical leave, I was a bit bored and wanted to watch any old Hindi mystery movie, which I had not seen. My search on You Tube led me to a B grade (or even C grade) movie with good lead stars (Vinod Mehra and Yogita Bali) and even a bit of interesting story line. However, I wasted 1 hr 56 minutes of my time, except for a song which is as good as the old Bappi Da songs.

This song is from a movie called “Namumkin” from the year 1988. It is one of the lesser known movies directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee. His other movies are considered masterpieces but not this one it seems.

During my recent communication with Pradeep ji when we were appreciating each other for our ‘love for music’ and I mentioned about how I feel fortunate to have a company of people like ‘Team Atul members’, I wrote to him that “I always thank god for getting me connected to people like you and others in our team ,
It is all by destiny 🙂 and our “musical karmas’”
In reply to this Pradeep ji wrote to me;
“I like the term “musical karma” :). One of a very well known HR trainers that I know here (he also has a filmi connection, he acted as Manisha Koirala’s father in the movie Bombay), once told me that I would describe you and me as “Rasikas of life”, I liked that term too.. So we are all Rasikas of life and music :)”

Libaas (1988) the last film by Gulzar with Pancham as its music director didn’t get an official release. The film was shown at some international film festivals, but neither came into the theatres nor was it released on video or DVD. And that is rather a pity! Thus we are tricked out of our last treat of family drama by Gulzar. Well one can’t say family drama as we use it for Hindi cinema; it is more about an extra-marital affair.

Libaas (1988) didn’t get an official release though it was shown at some international film festivals. When asked about the film’s fate some ten years back, Gulzar played the ball into the producer’s court and feigned disinterest. Most probably it will never get released. All that we are left with, are the songs and some dialogues from the movie.

Our parents are our first friends. They were the first ones who understood that we are hungry or upset or just bored without our even speaking (of course we would cry very very loudly at all those points but still). But before we came in and wreaked havoc in their lives, the best families are the ones where they were each other’s best friends.
