Hullo Atuldom
31st July, was that date in the monsoon of 1980, when the favourite singer of an entire generation left this world without any warning. There are anecdotes about the happenings of that date which keep surfacing now and then. We have heard that he was recording for Laxmikant -Pyarelal that day, a duet with Lata Mangeshkar, and was asked to stay back to record a songlet (if there is such a word) which was to play at the end of the movie and the words of that:
Tere aane ki aas hai dost
shaam phir kyun udhaas hai dost
mehki mehki phiza yeh kehti hain
tu kahin aas paas hai dost
tu kahin aas paas hain dost
Seem like written for remembering this legend called Mohammad Rafi.

Remembering Mohammed Rafi Sahab on his 40th death anniversary :
meri awaaz ka tee…ee…eer
jaayega dil kob hichee…ee..e.er
meri awaaz ka teer
jaayega dil ko bhi cheer
khoye nafrat laaye ulfat
ye hasar hai meherbaan
sun le tu dil ki sadaa
pyaar se pyaar sajaa
sun le tu dil ki sadaa
(Hasrat Jaipuri)
How true these lines are from this song from ‘Tere ghar ke saamne’(1963).
tum mujhe yoon bhulaa naa paaoge
haan tum mujhe yoon bhulaa naa paaoge
jab kabhi bhi sunoge geet mere
sang sang tum bhi gungunaaoge
haan tum mujhe yoon bhulaa naa paaoge
ho tum mujhey oon …
(HasratJaipuri)
This song from the film “Pagla Kahin kaa” has gone down in history as the closest to the real impact and the engravings of Rafi Sahab, for the fans of hindi film songs. No question of forgetting a legend, which lives on through his voice. And how he does this! Till there is sound and voices in this mortal world and there is the ability in human race to hear and appreciate the sounds of the universe, his vibrancy and legacy, his echo and alaap, shall survive, in sha Allah.
It is 40 years already since the soul left this world. We are lucky that we have lived in this era, blessed to be able to listen to Mohammed Rafi Sahab’s songs.

Today’s song is from the film Jeewan yatra-46. This film was made by Rajkamal. The film was a social film, directed by Master Vinayak and its music was composed by Vasant Desai.
V Shantaram left Prabhat films or rather was compelled to leave it, because he broke a rule of Prabhat Films. Soon after When the company was founded, one of its directors S Fattelal had married one of its lead actresses Gulab Bai aka Kamla Devi (one who is seen bending in the Prabhat Logo). After this, the team of partners/directors made a rule that if, in future, any of them falls in love with an artiste of the company or gets married to her, he will have to leave the company. After a few years, Keshav Rao Dhaiber, one partner, married Prabhat’s Heroine Nalini Tarkhad. He had to leave the company,in 1938.

Today’s song is from the film ‘Lal Batti’ aka ‘Red Light’ from 1947. It was a social film, made by Janata Chitra, Bombay. The film was surprisingly directed by Nari Ghadiyali – who was known for only C grade action and stunt films. This may be one of the rare social films which he directed. The music was composed by a lesser known music director – Indravadan Bhatt from Gujarat. The cast of the film was Prakash, Rajkumari, Phool Rani, Ali, Firoza, Habib, Vasant Kumar etc. First I thought that this Vasant Kumar in the cast must be the composer Vasant Kumar Naidu, but he was not known to have acted in any film. So, maybe he was someone else. The lyricist was SP Tripathi.

Hullo Atuldom
“Holi kab hai? kab hai holi? kab? kab?” – these are the famous lines mouthed by the most dreaded daaku of Ramgarh. He was wanted ‘dead or alive’ and carried a reward of ‘pachhas hazaar’ on his head. And from his den he declared rather pompously “Yahan se pachhas pachhas kos door gaon mein … jab bachcha raat ko rota hai, toh maa kehti hai bete so ja … so ja nahi to Gabbar Singh aa jayega”. With the most simple and not-so-profound dialogues like ‘Kitne Aadmi The’, ‘Jo Darr Gaya Samjho Marr Gaya’ and ‘Tera kya hoga Kalia’, Gabbar Singh alias Amjad Khan had arrived on the Bollywood scene, giving life to one of the most celebrated and iconic characters in Hindi cinema.

I have carried an impression in my mind for a long time that in the 1940s, Anil Biswas rarely used full-throated playback singers like Shamshad Begum, Zeenat Begum, Zohrabai Ambalewaali, Munawwar Sultana etc. This is based on my listening many songs composed by Anil Biswas during the last about one decade. To check my ‘hypothesis’, I glanced through all the songs composed by Anil Biswas which have been tagged under his name in our Blog.
In addition, I went through a couple of websites on Hindi film songs and my excel-sheets of songs for the period 1931-50, partially taken from HFGK. The main conclusions of my ad-hoc research are as under:
- Zeenat Begum and Munawwar Sultana did not sing for Anil Biswas though both of them had shifted to Mumbai sometime in 1944.
- Although Shamshad Begum had shifted to Mumbai along with the musical team of Ghulam Haider in 1942, Anil Biswas gave her chance to sing under his music direction for the first time in the film ‘Bhookh’ (1947).
- Anil Biswas took Zohrabai Ambalewaali for the first time in the film ‘Gramophone Singer’ (1938) followed by ‘Hum Tum Aur Woh’ (1938). After a gap of nearly 9 years, she got a chance to sing for him in ‘Naiyya’ (1947) which happened to be her last film with Anil Biswas as a playback singer.
- Ameerbai Karnataki and Anil Biswas started their musical career almost simultaneously in Mumbai during 1935-36 and she sang for him in a couple of films as an actor-singer. But as a playback singer, she got a chance to sing under the music direction of Anil Biswas for the first time in ‘Kismet’ (1943). With the popularity of her songs in this film, Ameerbai Karnataki became one of the topmost playback singers of Hindi films.
